Lorde Admitted Working With Jack Antonoff Made Her Feel Like a Horse in His ‘Stable’
Lorde and Jack Antonoff worked together on two of her albums, Melodrama and Solar Power. She joined the ranks of many other women in pop music who have collaborated with the producer. While their creative efforts have brought in critical acclaim, Lorde joked that working with him made her feel like she was part of his “stable.”

Antonoff has become one of the most sought-after producers in pop music. He has worked with artists like Taylor Swift, Clairo, Lana Del Rey, Kendrick Lamar, and Sabrina Carpenter.
“I’m only interested in working people with this very clear vision,” Antonoff told The Independent. “That’s when it’s exciting, when you can help protect and work with that. If I was working with someone who didn’t know what they wanted to do I would just leave and do my own stuff. Everything changes, they all become very connected, you start to see things differently. There’s this constant volley of back and forth, it keeps things moving.”
Lorde has bristled against people asking her about making a “Jack Antonoff record.” She also told The New York Times that she felt like a horse in “Jack’s stable” because of all the other pop artists Antonoff produced.
Lorde said she thought of Jack Antonoff as family
Lorde and Antonoff grew close while working on her album Melodrama. She said she came to view him as family.
“Jack is the best,” she told iHeartRadio. “He is one of the strangest people I’ve ever met in my life. He is so himself, which I love, and we just had the best time hanging out at his house, and at different studios around the place. But for the most part we wrote the record just in a bedroom in his house, sitting around the piano. But yeah, he’s a nut. He’s like my family at this point.”
She said they had a lot of fun together while recording the album.
“There was one point before things got really serious, and we had a deadline, where we would just go out for these ridiculous dinners, and order cocktails, and get like a giant platter of seafood. We’d be at the nicest restaurants in New York, and we were just like these scumbags, like he just wears the worst clothes all the time. We were just so kind of gross. I feel like that’s a real hallmark of this process is us just eating food that’s way nicer than we look like we can afford.”
She said it was hard for others to understand their relationship
Lorde has pushed back against rumors that she and Antonoff were romantically involved. She said they had a close relationship that people didn’t seem to be able to understand.
“No one who’s in a job that isn’t my job has a relationship like the one I have with Jack,” Lorde said later. “He’s like a partner to me. We’re in a relationship. It’s not a romantic relationship, but we’ve been in it for seven years, and it’s a really unique thing, so I don’t begrudge people maybe not being able to understand it.”
