Lorde Said It Was ‘Insulting’ to Give Jack Antonoff Too Much Credit for Her Music
Lorde and Jack Antonoff have collaborated on two of her albums to much acclaim. Antonoff has become a sought-after producer for pop artists, working with artists like Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, and Sabrina Carpenter. Because of Antonoff’s prevalence in the music industry, some described Lorde’s album Solar Power as a “Jack Antonoff record.” She found this incredibly insulting.
Lorde described it as ‘insulting’ to credit her work to Jack Antonoff
Antonoff has worked extensively with women in pop music. Lorde joked she is just another pop artist in “Jack’s stable.” Still, she did not like people to describe her work as an Antonoff record.
“I haven’t made a Jack Antonoff record,” she told The New York Times. “I’ve made a Lorde record and he’s helped me make it and very much deferred to me on production and arrangement.”
She felt insulted by the way this descriptor diminished the effort she put into making a record. While he helped her bring the album to life, it was first and foremost her project.
“Jack would agree with this,” she said. “To give him that amount of credit is frankly insulting.”
While he brought ideas to the table, she ultimately had the final say.
“I know that there are certain hallmarks of what Jack does and some of those things I really love and some of them I don’t like. And I beat them out of the work that we do together,” she said. “I say this with so much love and affection, but I feel like we’re doing up a house together and he’s like, ‘Look at this serviette that I fashioned into the shape of two swans! Look at this set of woven baskets!’ And I’m like, ‘Great — one per room.’”
Lorde shared what her relationship with Jack Antonoff is like
Some fans have speculated that Lorde and Antonoff were romantically involved. She views these rumors as “retro” and “sexist.” They have a very close connection, but it is strictly platonic.
“No one who’s in a job that isn’t my job has a relationship like the one I have with Jack,” she said. “He’s like a partner to me. We’re in a relationship. It’s not a romantic relationship, but we’ve been in it for seven years, and it’s a really unique thing, so I don’t begrudge people maybe not being able to understand it.”
She did not work with him on her latest record
After working with Antonoff on two albums, Lorde is working with a new producer on her upcoming album, Virgin. Jim-E Stack, who has worked with artists like Charli XCX, Bon Iver, and Haim.
Her latest album is scheduled to be released on June 27.
