Every Holiday season, netizens remind the world that people fall into two camps when it comes to Christmas movies. One group argues that Die Hard is the ultimate Christmas movie, while the other insists that, despite being set around Christmas, the action flick is not a Christmas tale. The debate has been ongoing for decades, but now a Christmas movie expert has weighed in. Macaulay Culkin has finally spoken on the longstanding Die Hard debate. Not everyone is going to love his take, though.

Macaulay Culkin says ‘Die Hard’ is not a Christmas movie

Macaulay Culkin spent part of his adult career completely avoiding discussing his life as a child star. In recent years, Culkin has begun to lean into his early roles, opening up about what it means to be Kevin McCalister every Christmas season. He is now trying to use that sway to influence a long-running debate over a Christmas movie. Culkin recently shared where he stands on Die Hard.

Culkin appeared on Mythical Kitchen and shared that he refuses to acknowledge Die Hard as a Christmas movie. He argued that, as the Godfather of Christmas, he has thought about this topic and has a reason for his decision. Culkin theorized that while the movie takes place at Christmas time, it could have worked around any other holiday, including St. Patrick’s Day. He went on to explain that Home Alone’s storyline could only work around Christmas, making it a classic holiday movie.

Other celebrities have weighed in

While Culkin quipped that he is the “Godfather of Christmas” and thus has more sway than others, not every celebrity agrees with his take. While Culkin firmly believes Die Hard is not a Christmas movie, Zooey Deschanel falls on the other side of the argument. During her appearance on Call Her Daddy earlier this month, Deschanel argued that not only was Die Hard a Christmas movie, but it was her preferred holiday flick. The famed New Girl actor has some skin in the game, too. While not as renowned as Culkin for her Christmas acting prowess, she did appear in Elf.

Over the years, other celebrities have weighed in, too.  Screenwriter Stephen E. de Souza took to Twitter in 2017 to insist the flick is a Christmas movie, though he is surely biased. Emma Heming Willis recently discussed the movie, insisting that it is part of the Willis holiday movie tradition. Her husband, star Bruce Willis, has previously suggested the film is not a Christmas movie, but a “Bruce Willis movie.”

While everyone appreciates Macaulay Culkin weighing in on the Die Hard Christmas debate, his take has done little to sway movie watchers on the other side of the debate. This might be one of those entertainment arguments that never has a resolution.
