Who Is Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s Widow, Tenisha Warner?
One year after Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s death, his widow is suing his mother, Pamela Warner.
When the actor was alive, he never publicly named his wife or daughter in the media to protect their privacy. It wasn’t until Malcolm-Jamal was honored at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards two months after his tragic death that the woman he was married to publicly shared her identity with an emotional tribute on Instagram.
Dr. Tenisha Delilah Warner is a doctor of psychology. She met Malcolm-Jamal through a mutual friend, and they began dating before tying the knot in 2017.
The Resident star gushed about their relationship on the Hot & Bothered podcast in May 2025, saying, “We have never had a fight, an argument, a raised voice or a harsh word said to one another. … And it’s not like we agree on everything. I think because we met later in life, we’ve just always been at a point where we have a way of communicating like adults.”
The two welcomed one daughter together. While Malcolm-Jamal didn’t reveal her name to the press, multiple outlets have since reported that their child’s name is MacKenzie.
In her tribute post to her late husband, Tenisha announced that she launched a business called River + Ember, “a family storytelling company holding the thread between generations through story, ritual, reflection, and art.” That is in addition to The Warner Family Foundation, which offers scholarships to “young artists ages 14–22 whose work reflects an interdisciplinary spirit.”
Now, Tenisha is making headlines for taking legal action against Malcolm-Jamal’s mother, Pamela, who serves as trustee of the Warner Family Trust, over alleged unpaid debts. The actor set up the trust in 1996 and per the filing, Tenisha requests that an alleged debt is covered by the trust since she believes Malcolm-Jamal’s estate “will be inadequate to satisfy” the costs.
In court documents filed on July 20, the first anniversary of The Cosby Show star’s death, Tenisha claimed that she is owed more than $1.2 million per an agreement the couple signed in 2022. Another lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles County Court on July 17.
She further claims that she is owed $1,276,042.46 comprising of $1 million in life-insurance obligations, $50,542.46 for an anniversary payment obligation laid out in their agreement, $30,500 with respect to a Roth IRA obligation, and $195,000 with respect to a salary obligation, as she worked as her late husband’s “chief of staff.”
Tenisha also says that Malcolm-Jamal agreed to a $1 million life insurance policy with her as the sole beneficiary but he failed to secure the policy. Tenisha is seeking interest as well as attorney’s fees. She is asking the court to prevent her mother-in-law from distributing any trust assets during the case until the dispute is resolved.
Malcolm-Jamal Warner died while swimming during a family vacation with Tenisha and their daughter in Costa Rica’s Playa Cocles in Limón province. His official cause of death was ruled accidental drowning by asphyxiation by submersion. He was 54.
