At the Los Angeles premiere of Wuthering Heights, Margot Robbie turned heads in an $8 million necklace previously worn by Elizabeth Taylor. The iconic Taj Mahal diamond sat at the hollow of her throat and fell in line with her trend of Tudor-inspired jewelry during the press tour. While the necklace was beautiful, a beauty expert believes it also carried a powerful message. He shared how Robbie’s jewelry told a story.

At the Los Angeles premiere of Wuthering Heights, Robbie wore a Schiaparelli gown and Taylor’s iconic Cartier Taj Mahal necklace. Richard Burton gifted the actress the necklace for her 40th birthday in 1972. Robbie noted that the choice of jewelry was “intentional.”

“This necklace and the diamond itself has a pretty incredible history and feels like a very romantic history, so it felt appropriate to match with our Schiaparelli gown,” she said, per People.

While Taylor wore the necklace on a long chain, Robbie opted to place the jewel at the base of her throat.

A jewelry expert commented on Margot Robbie’s necklace

As Robbie noted, the decision to wear the necklace was intentional. Jewelry expert Nilesh Rakholia, the founder of Abelini, elaborated on what this choice meant.

“This is an extraordinarily loaded choice,” he told Showbiz Cheat Sheet in a statement. “The Taj Mahal necklace is inseparable from Elizabeth Taylor’s mythology. Valued at around $8 million and famously gifted to her by Richard Burton for her 40th birthday, it represents devotion, excess, possession and spectacle. Wearing it immediately places Robbie in conversation with one of the most emotionally expressive jewelry legacies Hollywood has ever known.”

He added that the positioning of the jewel also carried significance.

“Jewelry placed at the throat is always intimate,” he explained. “It draws attention to one of the body’s most vulnerable points. Here, it feels deliberately confrontational. The pendant sits high, almost protective yet exposed. It suggests beauty edged with danger, which is exactly the emotional terrain of Wuthering Heights. This is romance with teeth.”

Rakholia saw the Taj Mahal diamond as part of “a necklace-led narrative” by Robbie on the red carpet. Many of her choices are Tudor-inspired rather than referencing the Georgian era, when Wuthering Heights is set.

“That tells us this isn’t about historical fidelity,” he said. “It’s about emotional amplification.”

He believes this represents a shift in red carpet jewelry culture

Rakholia sees Robbie’s deliberate jewelry choices as part of her performance as Cathy Earnshaw.

“Margot Robbie’s jewelry choices during the Wuthering Heights press tour are doing far more than referencing period costume,” he said. “They are articulating character psychology. This is jewelry as narrative, not nostalgia.”

He believes this represents a shift in red carpet styling altogether. Actors may use their looks as extensions of their characters.

“We’re moving away from quiet luxury and toward expressive, symbolic pieces,” he said. “Jewelry that communicates psychology rather than status. Robbie’s choices suggest that press tours are becoming extensions of character, not pauses between scenes. This necklace doesn’t exist to decorate a look. It exists to carry tension. That’s why it works. It doesn’t soften the character. It sharpens her.”

Wuthering Heights comes to theaters on Feb. 13.
