Meghan Markle ‘Intentionally Tried to Steal Sister-in-Law Kate’s Thunder’ With Netflix Special, Book Claims
Four years after Tom Bower released his bombshell book Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the War Between the Windsors, about Meghan Markle’s life and relationship with the royal family, the author has published another book about the Duchess of Sussex.
In his latest book Betrayal: Power, Deceit and the Fight for the Future of the Royal Family, Bower alleges that even though Meghan is no longer a working member of the royal family, the Suits alum is in constant competition with her sister-in-law, the Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton).
In an extract serialized by The Times, Bower claims that Meghan’s decision on when to promote her Netflix special, With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration, was carefully thought out.
According to the book, “While deciding on the launch date of Netflix’s trailer for her new series, and before announcing the Harper’s interview, Meghan’s publicists spotted that Kate would be attending the Royal Variety Performance in London on Nov. 19. A clash, but also perhaps perfect timing. For Meghan … in the days before Christmas was make or break. If all those carefully organized events failed to relaunch her in 2026, the Sussexes’ future would become bleak.”
Bower added that Meghan’s holiday show was launched on Dec. 3, on the same day that German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier began his state visit to the U.K., and just two days before Princess Kate’s Christmas Carol Concert was held on Dec. 5.
On that point, the Daily Mail’s Sara Vine weighed in with some tongue-in-cheek comments, saying, “Some people have pointed out that it’s perhaps not exactly a coincidence that this trailer has been released on the same evening that the Prince and Princess of Wales are appearing at the Royal Variety Show at the Royal Albert Hall. I can’t imagine what they are trying to imply. And besides, when has Meghan ever tried to steal her sister-in-law’s thunder?”
Meghan’s holiday special, which was filmed in 2024, showcased family traditions, cooking segments, and gift-wrapping tips. Unfortunatley for the duchess, it didn’t even crack the top 1,000 of Netflix’s most watched shows in the second half of 2025, according to the streaming service’s latest “What We Watched” report. Some of the Sussexes other Netflix projects watched in 2025 include Polo, which was released in December 2024, and had 100,000 views; and Harry & Meghan, which came out in late 2022, and had 600,000. Heart of Invictus (2023) and Live to Lead (2022), did not appear on the list at all, meaning they had less than 50,000 views over the last six months of 2025.
As for Bower’s book, Meghan and Harry did not take his latest allegations lying down. A statement was released from the Sussexes’ camp that read: “This is someone who has publicly stated, ‘the monarchy in fact depends on actually obliterating the Sussexes from our state of life,’ language that speaks for itself. He has made a career out of constructing ever more elaborate theories about people he does not know and has never met. Those interested in facts will look elsewhere; those seeking deranged conspiracy and melodrama know exactly where to find him.”
