After Cyrus’ parents, Tish and Billy Ray, divorced, Cyrus said she sided with her mother. This put her at odds with her father for a time.

“Half of us weren’t speaking to each other at one point, and we cleaned all that up,” Cyrus said on the podcast Reclaiming With Monica Lewinsky (via People). “That was a really important part of my year this year, was all of my family putting those lines of communication back together. A lot because of, you know, I had a lot of loyalty to my mom [Tish Cyrus], the way that families do when parents get divorced.”

After a period of estrangement, Cyrus wrote the song “Secrets” for her father.

“This song was written as a peace offering for someone I had lost for a time but always loved,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “In my experience, forgiveness and freedom are one and the same.”

She collaborated with Fleetwood Mac’s Mick Fleetwood and Lindsey Buckingham on the song.

“Thank you to Lindsey Buckingham & Mick Fleetwood for bringing magic to the music,” she wrote. “This song is for my dad.”

Billy Ray received the song warmly. Fleetwood Mac is one of his favorite bands.

“For my birthday, Miley gave me the gift of music and wrote me a song called Secrets and got my favorite musicians Fleetwood Mac to play on it!” he wrote on Instagram. “I love you Mile.”
