Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton were country music’s royal couple until they divorced in 2015. Both Lambert and Shelton have moved on with new partners and appear happy. In the immediate aftermath of their split, though, things were far rockier. Lambert admitted the year after the divorce was a struggle, so she got a tattoo to remember it.

Miranda Lambert said her year after her divorce from Blake Shelton was painful

In 2015, Lambert and Shelton announced their split on the same day they finalized their divorce.

“This is not the future we envisioned. And it is with heavy hearts that we move forward separately,” they said in a joint statement (per ABC News). “We are real people, with real lives, with real families, friends, and colleagues. Therefore, we kindly ask for privacy and compassion concerning this very personal matter.”

In early 2016, Lambert debuted a new song called “Scars,” written by her guitarist, Scotty Wray.  For a long time, she couldn’t make it through the song without crying because it reminded her of her challenging year.

“Scotty Wray has been with me since I was 17. For a long time he was my band. We have been through everything together, good and bad,” she told the audience, per Glamour. “We both went through a really s****y 2015 and we have the tattoos to prove it. He wrote a song a long time ago called ‘Scars.’ I never felt like I could sing it ’til now.”

She added that she didn’t think she could have pulled off singing the song before her divorce.

“It’s something you have to sell and really feel and really live and go through s*** to basically execute a song like that,” she said. “But every time he sings it … I’ve cried for the last 15 years. So I’m going to try it tonight myself.”

Lambert and Wray got tattoos together in honor of their “s****y” years. They both got an arrow. Lambert’s is on her hand.

“I got [this] with my guitar player, Scotty Wray,” she told Us Magazine. “We lost him two Februarys ago. He was with me since I was 17. He survived cancer, and I survived divorce. And so we got arrows pushing forward together. I’m so happy that we share that.”

Blake Shelton also said he struggled after his divorce from Miranda Lambert

Immediately after his divorce, Shelton said he felt despondent.

“This time last year, there was no light at the end of the tunnel for me personally,” Shelton once told People (via Yahoo). “There was a point there where I thought I didn’t even want to exist anymore.”

He said he wished he could just wake up when the pain of the divorce had passed.

“I told people I wished I could go into a coma and wake up a year from now,” he said.

Even before the divorce, Shelton once said he didn’t think he’d be able to move on from Lambert

Both of them have moved on with new partners

Shelton credits his new wife, Gwen Stefani, with getting him through this difficult time. They met as coaches on The Voice and went public with their relationship at the end of 2015. They married in 2021.
