As an NBA player, Anthony Edwards is used to sleeping in different hotels whenever he’s on the road with his team. But fans don’t hear much about the rooms he and the other athletes stay in. That’s until he was a guest on Sundae Conversation with Caleb Pressley.

On the Feb. 22 episode of the YouTube comedy series, the Minnesota Timberwolves guard was asked if he ever thought about how many people slept on the same hotel beds before he did.

The brutally honest Edwards responded: “Yep, especially when we go to Memphis. I be like, ‘Damn, my hotel ain’t nothin’ in Memphis.’ That s*** be dirty. I walked in a Memphis hotel one time and had stains and s*** on the bed.”

A quick Google search doesn’t list Memphis as one of the cities with the dirtiest hotel rooms. Some of the towns that do come up in the results are Long Beach in California, Jacksonville in Florida, and Corpus Christi, Texas. Sacramento also made that list, and even though Edwards has stayed in hotels there when the Timberwolves play the Kings, he didn’t mention that city.

Many hotels, even luxury resorts, have up to 10 times more bacteria — including fecal strains — than are allowed in hospitals. The housekeepers who clean the rooms spend about 30 minutes tidying up and changing sheets. But some things don’t get wiped down or cleaned at all. That includes high-touch surfaces like light switches, remote controls, phones, and decorative items on the bed.

California-based travel advisor Maria Diego told Travel & Leisure, “Having worked in hotels, the first thing I fling off to a far corner of the room are decorative pillows and any decorative runner that goes along the foot of the bed. These never get washed.”
