Nicole Kidman Applied for Residency in Portugal Without Keith Urban Months Before News of Their Split Broke
Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban are ending their marriage. While the news of their impending divorce only recently broke, the couple has reportedly been living apart for some time. In July, some began to think there was trouble in their relationship when Kidman applied for residency in Portugal. Urban’s name did not appear on any of the documents.

In July, Kidman applied for residency in Portugal, where she and Urban already own a home. She reportedly also wanted a property at the exclusive CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club. People were quick to notice that Urban’s name didn’t appear on the paperwork. A source close to the couple said this was because he would be touring.
“Keith was unable to be in Portugal for this appointment as he is currently on tour in the U.S., and it is mandatory for applicants to be physically present in order to apply for the visa,” the source told the New York Post. “He is scheduled to submit his application at a later date that works with his tour schedule. While Nicole and Keith own a home in Portugal, their primary residence will continue to be in Nashville.”
Just two months later, though, news broke that the couple was divorcing after nearly two decades of marriage.

News of Kidman and Urban’s divorce has shocked fans. People in the couple’s inner circle reportedly were not surprised, though.
“Their lives were moving in different directions, and once he quietly set up his own place, it felt like the writing was on the wall,” a source told People, adding, “It really hasn’t been a secret in their circles that Keith and Nicole have been living separately for a while now. People close to Keith felt like the split was kind of inevitable.”
Urban reportedly initiated the split. A source claimed that Kidman hoped to reconcile with her husband.
“She didn’t want this,” a source said. “She has been fighting to save the marriage.”
She has reportedly been leaning on her family as she navigates the end of her marriage.
Kidman previously referred to him as the love of her life
Kidman and Urban met in 2005. She said that after just a few months of dating, she knew she wanted to marry him.
“It was my [38th] birthday, and he stood outside with gardenias at 5 a.m. on my stoop in New York,” she told People. “That is when I went, ‘This is the man I hope I get to marry.’”
Urban took her to Woodstock on a motorcycle for a trip. During that time, she began to think of him as the love of her life.
“It was pretty intense,” she said. “I believed by that point he was the love of my life. Maybe that’s because I am deeply romantic, or I’m an actress, or I have strong faith as well, but I just believed, ‘Oh, okay, here he is.’”
They married one year later.
