‘The Vampire Diaries’ star admitted she hadn’t started wedding planning

Dobrev and White got engaged in October 2024. While they were excited to share the news with fans, Dobrev admitted she’d done very little wedding planning, even six months after the fact. She said her busy schedule and desire to enjoy being White’s fiancée kept her from making plans.

“I was in Australia shooting a movie and then Christmas and New Year’s,” she told E! News this March. “We’re just enjoying being engaged at this point and being in that sort of phase because a lot of your life is — you have a boyfriend for half of your life and then you have a husband for half of your life but the fiancé period is very short.”

She added that she saw no reason to rush the wedding planning process.

“I really want to enjoy it and not rush that process,” she said.

A source told People that “it was a mutual decision, and wasn’t an easy one, but it was made with love and a deep respect for one another.”

On Sept. 7, Dobrev stepped out at the Toronto International Film Festival without her engagement ring. She posted images of White on Instagram as recently as five days ago, though.

Nina Dobrev and Shaun White got engaged in New York City

Dobrev and White got engaged in October 2024 after two thwarted attempts. White scrapped one plan after Dobrev hurt her knee, and another because he could tell she expected it. Finally, he planned to propose at the Golden Swan restaurant in New York City. Unfortunately, though, Dobrev felt under the weather and didn’t want to go out. Unwilling to change his plans again, White decided to craft a story to lure her out.

White’s publicist created an invitation for an intimate Vogue dinner with Anna Wintour at the restaurant. She couldn’t turn down the invitation and went to the restaurant. There, she found it empty of anyone but White and a photographer.

“I went into shock,” she told Vogue. “I just froze and stared at him.”

Dobrev said she felt the proposal was perfect, even though she admitted she blacked out the second she saw White in the restaurant.

“I knew she was nervous because when she’s nervous she’ll make jokes,” White said. “She’s like, ‘So, wait, Anna’s not here?’

Afterward, their friends and family members joined them at the restaurant to celebrate.
