For weeks, onlookers have watched as Sean’ Diddy’ Combs stood trial for sex trafficking and racketeering. The criminal case is finally over, with closing arguments delivered on June 27. In a stunning and largely unexpected move, Diddy’s lawyer attempted to redefine the nature of Diddy’s relationship with Cassie Ventura entirely. Marc Agnifilo, who took the lead on the case, even tried to give the romance a positive spin, calling it a “modern-day love story.” Now, we have to wait to see if the jury agrees with him.

Diddy’s lawyer calls his relationship with Cassie Ventura a ‘great modern-day love story’

Defense attorney Marc Agnifilo delivered a four-hour closing argument on June 27 to a riveted group of jurors. While he attempted to pick apart the prosecution’s claims, he relied heavily on Diddy’s relationship with Cassie Ventura to prove his point. He painted the relationship between Sean “Diddy” Combs and Cassie Ventura as “a great modern love story” rather than evidence of criminal wrongdoing.

The attorney compelled jurors to view everything from the drug-fueled “freak-offs” to the sex videos and violent encounters as an intensely emotional but consensual partnership. Agnifilo alleged that the government had “exaggerated” Combs’s lifestyle, framing an eccentric and extreme existence as racketeering or sex trafficking.

In the long-winded and winding closing argument, Agnifilo even suggested Ventura had “won” despite admitting she was a victim of domestic abuse. According to Business Insider, he pointed to the massive $20 million lawsuit settlement as proof that Ventura had won. He insisted Diddy’s accusers were financially motivated. The seasoned attorney punctuated that claim by pointing to anonymous witness Jane and her financial windfall, too.

When Could a Verdict Arrive?

Closing statements are officially over; now, the jury must deliberate. Judge Arun Subramanian is expected to give the jurors legal instructions and send them off to discuss the case. Jury deliberations are expected to begin on Monday, June 30.

With that being said, it’s impossible to say when they might reach a verdict. Verdicts can be reached at any point in deliberations, with some juries deliberating for just hours while others can take days to come to an agreement. Diddy’s case is a complex one, and it will likely take some time for the jury to reach a verdict. A hung jury is also a possibility.

Other high-profile cases have seen juries deliberate for days. The jury in Harvey Weinstein’s 2022 trial took 10 days to reach a verdict. The jury that found R. Kelly guilty of his crimes took two days to hand down a verdict.
