Jane Fonda Once Admitted That She Couldn’t Keep Her Hands off of Robert Redford

Robert Redford’s death on September 16 shocked the Hollywood community. The movie star was an icon that the world is certainly missing already. While many stars paid tribute to Redford, Jane Fonda offered a heartfelt statement. While the costars had an excellent working relationship, it turns out Fonda might have wanted more. She once revealed that she was in love with the star and couldn’t keep her hands off of him when they were working together.

Jane Fonda and Robert Redford’s careers were intertwined in many ways. One of their breakout films found them working together, and one of Redford’s latter roles found him opposite Fonda, as well. In 2017, Fonda sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss Our Souls at Night, her last flick with Robert Redford. She happily discussed their early collaborations and their deep friendship as well.

Fonda told the outlet that when she worked with Redford on Barefoot in the Park, she could hardly keep her hands off of him. While they were both married at the time, she admitted she was absolutely in love with the Hollywood icon. While they both had romantic relationships and enjoyed the longest-standing partnerships, Fonda admitted her attraction to Redford never changed. She told the outlet that Redford was a “great kisser,” noting she had as much “fun” kissing him as a 20-something girl and as an almost-80-year-old woman. Fonda made it clear that the fantasy was never realized, and their close friendship never turned romantic.

While Jane Fonda has been nothing but forthcoming about her feelings now, years after the duo worked together, she apparently was much more subtle during their working relationship. While Fonda let the world know how deeply she felt for Redford, she never told him, and he never noticed. In a 2017 interview with  The Telegraph, Redford said he was shocked to learn of Fonda’s feelings from interviews. He insisted he never knew she was in love with him. Apparently, he didn’t notice that she couldn’t keep her hands off of him.

It is unlikely that anything would have happened even if he had known. While Redford had plenty of admirers, thanks to his charisma and undeniable good looks, he was also a family man who appeared to stay faithful in his marriages. Redford was married to Lola Van Wagenen when he met Fonda. They remained married until the 1980s, when they respectfully and “without scandal” split after 27 years together. His brief period as a bachelor was also scandal-free. There were no reports of Playboy behavior or secret liaisons. Redford was rarely even photographed out on the town. In the 1990s, years after his split from Van Wagenen, he met Sibylle Szaggars. The duo dated for years before finally tying the knot in 2009. They remained married until Redford’s death this week.
