Years before becoming many people’s favorite artist, Olivia Rodrigo was one of One Direction’s biggest fans. The singer loved the boy band so much that she began writing fanfiction about them. Years after this, she found herself in a position that would have shocked her childhood self: spending time with Harry Styles. She spoke about how their outing went.

Olivia Rodrigo admitted she used to write One Direction fanfiction

When Rodrigo was seven, One Direction formed. She was an instant and dedicated fan.

“I actually was the hugest One Direction fan when I was younger,” she told Capital FM’s Will Manning (per Billboard). “This is sort of embarrassing, but I’m going to tell you anyway. … I used to write One Direction fan fiction when I was in middle school.”

She added that she wrote “cheesy” fantasies like, “Oh, Harry proposes to you and asks you to be his wife.” In a recent interview with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s Music Makes Us podcast, Rodrigo wrote more about her writing habit as a child. She never could have known that, years later, she’d spend time with Harry Styles.

“I used to write One Direction fanfiction when I was in elementary school,” she said. “Many years later, I hung out with Harry Styles, and we, like, got tea, and we walked around.”

She said she felt shocked, and a little like she was living out her own fanfiction.

“I got home, and I was like: ‘What the f***?’” Olivia went on. “Like, I feel like I wrote that in a fanfiction and I, like, lived it. That’s so crazy, how that can happen in your life.”

She added that she lived up to her childhood expectations of him.

“And he’s so sweet!” she said. “I don’t want to… I know he’s very private, but I remember being like: ‘If I told 10-year-old Olivia, she’d be like: ‘Shut the f*** up! You’re lying!’”

Olivia Rodrigo spoke about connecting with another member of One Direction

Styles isn’t the only former One Direction member with whom Rodrigo has connected. After the explosive success of her song “Driver’s License,” Niall Horan reached out to her.

“So the fact that [Niall’s] reached out to me is amazing,” she said. “We’ve actually been texting. He’s been giving me advice about the craziness of the music industry. So it’s been really amazing.”

As a self-described “die-hard” fan of the band, the support of two former members was likely very exciting to her.
