Was Patrick Mahomes’ Reaction to Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift’s Engagement Too Simple?
In case you were living under a rock and didn’t hear the big news yet, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are engaged!
The Kansas City Chiefs tight end and “Karma” songstress nearly broke the internet on Aug. 26, when they shared their happy news via a carousel of Instagram snaps and the caption: “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.”
The Instagram post racked up 10 million likes in an hour and more than tripled that in less than 24 hours.
Congrats poured in from Swifties and NFL fans alike, and many were looking out for how Kelce’s teammate and good friend, Patrick Mahomes, would react.
The Chiefs quarterback shared the post on his own Instagram Story and dropped three heart emojis. But some were waiting for a little more from Patrick, given it was such huge news, and expected a longer congratulatory message.
However, there’s a good chance the signal caller knew about the engagement long before the rest of the world did. After all, Travis’ father, Ed Kelce, confirmed that his son proposed to the pop star about two weeks ago.
“Travis actually did the proposal, oh, maybe two weeks, not quite two weeks ago,” Ed said in an interview with News 5 in Cleveland on Aug. 26. “He was going to put it off till this week. I think she was getting maybe a little antsy, but he was going to put her off till this week, to, you know, make some grand thing, to make it a big special event.
“And I told him repeatedly, you know, you could do it on the side of the road, do it any place that makes it a special event … when you get down on one knee and ask her to marry you.”
That nearly two-week timeline dates back to when Swift appeared on Travis and his brother Jason Kelce’s New Heights podcast, leading some to believe Patrick knew ahead of their public announcement. Speculation swirled about that being the case when looking back on a press conference Patrick and head coach Andy Reid did on Aug. 13, in which they both seemed to be talking about something more than just Swift’s new album.
Patrick’s wife, Brittany Mahomes, did gush about the engagement on her Instagram Story with a sweet message, writing: “Two of the most genuine people meet and fall in love. Just so happy for these two.”
According to Travis’ dad, the proposal took place in a garden at the athlete‘s home in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.
“He got her out there, they were about to go out to dinner, and he said, ‘Let’s go out and have a glass of wine,’ … they got out there, and that’s when he asked her,” Ed revealed. “And it was beautiful. They started FaceTiming me and their mother and her folks to make sure everybody knew. So, to see them together is great.”
