People Say Drake Is ‘Destined for Irrelevancy’ After He Posted in Support of Tory Lanez
Drake has received a great deal of negative attention in the past year, and a recent post in support of Tory Lanez hasn’t done him any favors. In a comment, he dissed music journalist Rob Markman and pushed for Lanez’s release from prison. People are going after him online as a result.
Tory Lanez was convicted of shooting Megan Thee Stallion
In 2020, Lanez and Megan Thee Stallion got into an altercation while leaving a pool party. She exited the car and Lanez allegedly told her to “Dance, b****” before opening fire at her feet.
“(Megan) observed Mr. Peterson holding a firearm, and then she observed him start to shoot,” LAPD Detective Ryan Stogner testified, per Rolling Stone. “Megan immediately felt pain to her feet, observed blood, fell to the ground, and then crawled to an adjacent driveway of a residence … She described her injuries as bleeding profusely.”
Lanez denied shooting her, but a jury found him guilty. He is currently serving a 10-year sentence.
“When the guilty verdict came on Dec. 23, 2022, it was more than just vindication for me, it was a victory for every woman who has ever been shamed, dismissed, and blamed for a violent crime committed against them,” she told Elle in 2023.
People are ripping Drake for his post in support of Tory Lanez
Some people have publicly doubted Megan’s account of the night and called for Lanez’s release from prison. Drake recently did so in an Instagram comment. He commented on a video of a 2019 interview between Markman and Lanez in which Lanez recites some of his favorite Lil Wayne lyrics.
“Of course this goof markman couldn’t finish the bar… free Tory,” he wrote.
In his response, Markman referenced the fact that Drake sued his record label over Kendrick Lamar’s diss track, “Not Like Us.”
“But if I start calling you names you gonna sue,” he wrote.
Many people have criticized Drake for supporting Lanez.
“He’s close to 40, his age mates are all settling down and he’s on social media acting like a 23 year old loser,” wrote one Reddit user. “It’s weird.”
A number of people noted that this type of behavior will tarnish his legacy and make it difficult for him to gain public favor again. He became a punchline last summer after being on the receiving end of the blistering “Not Like Us.”
“Drake era is over. He had a 1% chance at a comeback but couldn’t drop anything better than not like us,” wrote one person. “Then he started suing and if you’re a hiphop head, you can’t respect this man anymore.”
“Every time Drake opens his mouth he just reinforces the fact he is destined for irrelevancy,” added another person.
A number of people expressed disbelief that Drake is publicly supporting someone who was convicted of shooting a woman.
Drake pushed for a pardon for Tory Lanez
This is not the first time Drake has thrown his support behind Lanez. He infamously doubted Megan’s account of the shooting in the song “Circo Loco,” rapping, “This b**** lie ’bout getting shots, but she still a stallion/She don’t even get the joke but she still smiling.”
He also shared a petition urging California Governor Gavin Newsom to pardon Lanez.
