People Slam Doja Cat for Mocking Sydney Sweeney’s Controversial Denim Ad – Even If They Agree With Her
Everyone has seen Sydney Sweeney’s new American Eagle ad, including singer Doja Cat. The ad campaign for the company’s fall line has drawn backlash and sparked heated debate online. While Doja didn’t offer her opinion on it, her tone in the video made it clear that she doesn’t think too highly of the ad. Many people think it’s hypocritical of her to share her opinion.
The ‘Euphoria’ actor’s new ad campaign has drawn backlash
Sweeney recently partnered with American Eagle Outfitters for their fall campaign. She said she has always been a fan of the brand.
“There is something so effortless about American Eagle – it’s the perfect balance of being put-together but still feeling like yourself,” she said in a statement, per Page Six. “It’s rare to find a brand that grows with you, the way American Eagle has for generations. They have literally been there with me through every version of myself.”
Sweeney has taken part in a number of photoshoots for the brand, but one ad in particular has gotten the most attention. In a now-viral video, Sweeney wears jeans and a denim jacket.
“Genes are passed down from parents to offspring,” she says. “Often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color. My jeans are blue.”
A voiceover follows up to note, “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.” A number of people online have criticized the ad, with many saying the ad felt as though it was promoting eugenics. Because Sweeney has blonde hair and blue eyes, some have accused the ad of being Nazi propaganda.
Doja Cat made a video mocking Sydney Sweeney’s denim ad
Doja Cat recently waded into the discourse with a video mocking the ad. In it, she reads Sweeny’s lines verbatim, though in an exaggerated Southern accent. While some people find it a little hypocritical of Doja to point this out — she has been at the center of multiple controversies of her own — they have nonetheless appreciated the video.
“I thought it was mean at first glance, but I looked up the ad and now I think two things: 1. Sydney seems insufferable. 2. This is funny,” wrote one Reddit user.
“I love Doja when she’s being dorky like this,” added another person. “Like back then in the old twitter.”
A number of people shared the meme, “Heartbreaking: The worst person you know just made a great point.” Some people were just glad that celebrities were speaking out about the ad.
“Doja is not the right person to call out someone but Sydney sure needs to be called out more,” wrote one person.
Many people say it’s hypocritical of Doja Cat to call out Sydney Sweeney
While some people found Doja’s video funny, others didn’t think she had any room to call out Sweeney. She has faced controversy for her alleged involvement in racist chatrooms and wearing a shirt with a photo of alt-right YouTuber Sam Hyde.
“Throwing rocks from her glass house I see, oop,” wrote one person.
“Bold of her to comment on this given her past,” wrote another person.
Many people have referenced the tweet from rapper N.O.R.E. about Doja’s alleged involvement in video chatrooms. He posted, “She in racial chat rooms showing feet!!!”
“She is so tone deaf lmao her and her opinions can go back to the cam room she was showing feet in,” wrote one person.
In general, many people took this as an opportunity to turn on both Doja and Sweeney.
“Pot meet kettle,” wrote one person.
