Philadelphia Eagles Star Saquon Barkley’s Fiancée Anna Congdon ‘Never Liked the Spotlight’
Just days before the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX, Saquon Barkley shared the news that he and his partner, Anna Congdon, were engaged.
In an interview with People, Barkley said, “I have an amazing fiancée. I can’t be the athlete I am and have the success I have in my career without the help of her. She’s been super helpful and always has my back, not only in football but throughout life. There’s a lot that goes on. But as we continue to grow and mature and go through life together, we continue getting closer and continue to get even better.”
Barkley is one of the best running backs in the NFL and Congdon was once a star athlete herself. However, it’s been revealed that she has never been a fan of the spotlight.
Here’s more about the private woman who is Barkley’s rock.
How long Congdon and Barkley have been together
Like Barkley, Congdon grew up in Eastern Pennsylvania. The two met when they both attended college at Penn State. They were first spotted together at a fraternity party in December 2016. At the time, Congdon was a freshman, and Barkley was a sophomore. But it’s believed they didn’t start officially dating until sometime in 2017.
The couple welcomed their daughter, Jada Clare Barkley, in April 2018, followed by a son, Saquon Jr., in September 2022.
“Motherhood is a million little moments that God weaves together with grace, redemption, laugh, tears, and most of all love,” Congdon wrote on Instagram.
Barkley also gushed about his little ones, saying that “[Saquon Jr.] lights up the room. Amazing smile. Jada is being an amazing big sister. Anna, obviously an amazing mom. We’ve got a beautiful little family.”
Congdon was a promising basketball star, but didn’t like the spotlight
Before Penn State, Congdon attended Forest City Regional High School. There, she was the captain of the women’s basketball team and during her senior year, helped lead Forest City Regional to a district championship.
Her head coach, John Duffy, remembered that she was a “great kid” who shied away from the spotlight.
“There was just something about her. As soon as I walked in and watched the practice, I knew that she was a leader. She was a great kid,” Duffy told the Scranton Times-Tribune. “She treated everybody with respect. She treated the 15th kid on the team the same way as she treated the No. 1 player on the team.
“She never really liked the spotlight, to be honest with you. She was always that kind of kid. I know that’s the type of mother she is. She’s probably very protective of the kids, not wanting them to be into that kind of thing — the circus and what it could turn into.”
Duffy added that he believes Congdon has handled herself well given that her life has become more public than she may have liked because of her relationship with Barkley.
“Everybody knew Saquon from around here. He was one of the best running backs in Pennsylvania history,” Duffy said. “I knew she’d be alright, because she wouldn’t let anyone not treat her right. She’s a tough kid, but a sweetheart of a kid.”
