After Alyssa Thomas played women’s college basketball at the University of Maryland and became the Terrapins’ all-time leader in scoring, rebounding, and double-doubles, she was selected by the New York Liberty with the fourth pick in the 2014 WNBA Draft. Thomas was traded to the Connecticut Sun that same day and spent 10 seasons there.

She became an All-Star in the league and is the only player in WNBA history to ever record 15+, 15+, 10+ with 0 turnovers. She’s also won championships for Team USA and in 2024, helped the women’s basketball team win a gold medal at the Olympics in Paris.

In 2025, Thomas was traded to the Phoenix Mercury, where she has put together an MVP-caliber season. Now, fans want to know all about her including who she’s in a relationship with. Well, they don’t have to look very far for her fiancée since they’re on the same team.

Thomas’ partner first made a name for herself in college

Thomas’ fiancée is fellow WNBA player DeWanna Bonner.

Bonner was born on Aug. 21, 1987, in Fairfield, Alabama. She went to Fairfield High School in her hometown before attending Auburn University, where she earned a degree in psychology. On the court, Bonner became the first Auburn player to lead the SEC in scoring. As her WNBA player profile notes, she holds the school’s scoring record with a total of 2,162 points.

After her success at the collegiate level, Bonner was selected with the fifth overall pick by the Phoenix Mercury in the 2009 WNBA Draft.

Bonner was previously married to another WNBA player

In July 2023, Thomas got down on one knee and proposed to Bonner, who happily accepted. The two shared a post of their special moment via Instagram with the caption: “FOREVER.”

Bonner was previously married to fellow WNBA player Candice Dupree. The two tied the knot and shortly after, Bonner gave birth to twin girls. However, their marriage didn’t last and ended in divorce.

Before she began dating Thomas, Bonner wasn’t looking for a relationship with another teammate again, telling SB Nation, “I wasn’t trying to get into another relationship, especially with a teammate, after I’d just come off of one. That just was not in my goals or vision at all.”

Her feelings on that changed when she met Thomas in 2020, and they eventually began dating during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Reunited and it feels so good

Following Bonner’s stint with the Mercury, which lasted 10 seasons. She was traded to the Connecticut Sun. In February 2025, she signed a contract with the Indiana Fever. But then on July 8, 2025, it was announced that she was returning to the Mercury where she would be reunited to play with her former Suns’ teammate and wife-to-be.

Thomas and Bonner were chasing the same goal at the same time when the Mercury made the playoffs a few months later, and Bonner gushed over her fiancée’s focus and determination to win it all.

“She wants to win. She wants to win the championship bad,” Bonner told Andscape. “She’ll do whatever it takes.”
