Popular Royal Family Couple Would Become First Royals Ever to Join U.K. Version of ‘Dancing With the Stars’
Ever since Prince William’s surprise appearance on Dancing With the Stars, people have been talking about other royals competing on the show.
While the future king did not showcase his dancing moves in the ballroom, he made an appearance via video to wish his pal, wildlife conservationist Robert Irwin, and his dancing professional partner, Witney Carson, good luck.
Now, some hope that a royal or two could be coaxed into doing the show — more accurately, the U.K.’s version of the reality competition called Strictly Come Dancing. If a popular royal family member competing on a reality TV show sounds far-fetched, you should know that it already happened.
Here’s more on that, and which royals a former Strictly Come Dancing pro wants to see in the ballroom soon.
A former dancing pro hopes to see this royal couple on the ballroom floor
Strictly Come Dancing professional dancer Erin Boag wants Princess Anne’s daughter, Zara Tindall, and Zara’s husband, former rugby player Mike Tindall, to sign up for the beloved show. Boag recalled the pair coming to support her when she was dancing with former English rugby star, Austin Healey, back in 2008.
Speaking on behalf of Genting Casino’s 20k Spins competition, Boag told Showbiz Cheat Sheet, “It would be great to see a royal do it — would be great to see Zara do it. I don’t know if that would be allowed. Mike’s technically married into the family, though. Zara and Mike were great friends with Austin Healey, and they’d often come and watch him.”
Boag added that it would be so “great” to have another couple compete on the show in the same season, something that hasn’t happened since 2007.
“It would be quite good to bring a royal in. I feel like we need to get some big names in there,” she said. “Some really big names — that would be great. Mike Tindall versus Zara Tindall. Wouldn’t be the first couple to take part, we had Gabby and Kenny Logan!”
However, Boag did note that she feels Mike could have a bit of a disadvantage as he’s a “big” ex rugby player, explaining, “Mike’s quite big though. I’ve danced with rugby players. One big, one nimble. It depends on their size. I first danced with Martin Offiah. I mean, Jesus, he was known for his speed. But he was also known for his bulk. Then you get somebody like Austin Healey, and Matt Dawson did it well. They both played winger, and because they’re known for their nimbleness and they’re small, they were both phenomenal. The Tindalls would be great.”
The reality show Mike appeared on previously
If you think the Palace would forbid Mike or Zara from competing on the show, that’s not the case. No one prevented Mike from going on I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here. He even spoke about his dancing skills while there.
The program, which is a hit in the U.K., only lasted two seasons in the U.S. In the series, celebrities live in an Australian jungle with few comforts. Some of the American contestants who attempted to brave the jungle conditions included Caitlyn Jenner, Melissa Rivers, and Tyson Beckford.
Mike competed on Season 22 of the U.K. series. He entered the camp on Day 1 and left on Day 21, finishing in fourth place.
We’ll just have to wait and see if Mike and Zara are up for a dancing challenge.
