Prince Harry Keeps Publicly Trying to ‘Settle Scores’ With His Family While Meghan Is Dubbed ‘Duchess of Digs’ for More Subtle Shots at Royals
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down from their roles as working royals in 2020, but the pair didn’t go quietly. After settling in America, the two decided to publicly criticize the way they claim the royal family treated them when they were part of the monarchy.
The Sussexes also aired out the royals’ dirty laundry through televised interviews, on podcasts, in their Netflix series Harry & Meghan, and in the prince’s memoir Spare.
Harry’s family, however, did not respond to the allegations leveled against them. The public ultimately grew tired of all the royal-bashing and the Sussexes’ constant-victim narrative, so the duke and duchess decided to switch tactics. But they haven’t exactly moved on.
Prince Harry is still hellbent on ‘settling a score’ with his family
For years, it seemed like Harry wanted a response from his family and kept egging them on to get one. When they didn’t take the bait, he told Anderson Cooper during a 60 Minutes interview that their “silence is betrayal.”
The Duke of Sussex was still met with a wall of silence, so he stopped talking about his family and worked on his individual projects and charities. But old habits die hard and when a court case Harry had been fighting didn’t go his way, he called out his father, King Charles, in a surprising interview with the BBC.
All the while, the duchess has looked as though she completely moved on and was praised for focusing solely on her brand.
As PR and branding expert Jack Izzard, of Gallia Communications, told The Sun: “Harry’s still stuck in the past and trying to settle scores [but Meghan] is looking ahead, forging this brand.”
Meghan appears to be focusing on her brand but is still taking subtle ‘digs’ at the royals
Now though it’s being claimed that Meghan hasn’t moved on from taking shots at the royal family, she’s just much more subtle about it than her husband.
During a segment on Sky News Australia, it was noted that the former Suits star has taken “six major swipes ” at her in-laws so far this year, leading to her being dubbed the “Duchess of Digs.”
News Corp columnist Angela Mollard said Meghan keeps “having a go” at Prince Harry’s relatives because it “keeps her in the news cycle.”
“When she launched As Ever, her new company the very first thing she said was look when I had The Tig ‘I loved gardening and I loved cooking and being a hostess.’ She basically said I had to keep my light under a bushel at this time because of the royal family,” Mollard told Sky News Digital host Gabriella Power. “Then we get her show … and there’s digs throughout that show.
“They’re all very carefully considered, they’re not a direct assault on the royal family, but you only have to follow it to know that she’s just getting these little digs in all the time, which means that she can’t quite disengage herself from being a royal. The fact that she’s constantly being discussed means that she’s a bona fide person to be engaging with.”
