Prince Harry Was Very Upset With Princess Diana’s Sisters After They Told Him Meghan and His Mother Had ‘Nothing in Common’
During the Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan, Prince Harry gushed about how much he thinks his wife is like his late mother, Princess Diana.
“So much of what Meghan is and how she is, is so similar to my mum,” the duke said. “She has the same compassion, the same empathy, the same confidence. She has this warmth about her.”
But it’s been reported that Harry may be on an island by himself with that opinion and was pretty “disappointed” when Diana’s sisters didn’t agree with him about the duchess being just like his mom.
Here’s more on that, and why one of Diana’s close confidants doesn’t believe the late royal would have been her daughter-in-law’s biggest fan.
Author says Princess Harry was upset Diana’s family didn’t see similarities with Meghan
Royal biographer Tom Bower shared the information he was told about Harry’s huge “disappointment” after his mother’s sisters, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes, met Meghan and failed to see the similarities Harry saw between her and Diana.
Bower, who authored the explosive book Revenge: Meghan, Harry, and the War Between the Windsors, wrote: “Harry assumed that Diana’s family and friends would see a similarity between Diana and his [then] fiancée. Both, he said, shared the same problems. He was so disappointed. No one agreed that his vulnerable mother had anything in common with his [then] girlfriend. More discomforting for him, they thought Meghan would not fit in with the royal family.”
According to Bower’s book, it was Diana’s brother though Charles, the Earl of Spencer, who advised his nephew against rushing into marriage with Meghan.
“His advice provoked a bitter reaction,” Bower noted per the Daily Mail.. “This was going to be really hard. Harry would later reflect on establishing Meghan’s place in the family.”
Diana’s friend doesn’t think the princess would have been ‘a fan’ of Meghan
Tina Brown is the former editor-in-chief of Vanity Fair and The New Yorker. She was also one of Princess Diana’s confidants who met with the royal mere weeks before Diana died following a car crash in Paris. Brown, who later wrote the princess’s biography titled The Diana Chronicles, discussed what Diana may have thought of her youngest son’s bride.
She believes that the princess would have been “thrilled” when Harry met Meghan because he was so happy. However, Brown opined that because of how “protective” Diana was of him, she wouldn’t be pleased with the direction of his life now.
“Diana was very protective of her boys,” Brown explained via Daily Beast. “She would have been very, very protective of Harry and I believe very anxious about this direction they’ve taken. I think she would have felt Meghan was steering Harry in a direction that was not good for him.”
Brown added that the prince’s mom probably wouldn’t be a big fan of his wife, especially not the way the duke and duchess believe, saying: “I don’t think Diana would have been the great fan of Meghan that Meghan herself might perhaps imagine.”
