The British royal family marked another year celebrating King Charles‘ birthday with the annual Trooping the Colour. But during a day that was filled with pomp and pageantry, there were also anti-monarchists who attended and made their voices heard. No royal was safe from the protesters’ boos, not even the Princess of Wales and her three children.

There was no mistaking Kate’s reaction to the jeers as she stared down the group when the carriage carrying her, Prince George, Prince Louis, and Princess Charlotte rolled by. But an expert believes her reaction may actually strengthen the public’s affection for her.

Nick Ede is a UK-based brand and culture expert and public relations specialist with over 20 years of experience in fashion and entertainment. He is a regular commentator on television and in the press. Alongside his media work, Ede runs a PR agency and is a dedicated charity campaigner, having raised significant funds and awareness for stroke charities through his initiative Style For Stroke. He was also once close friends with Meghan Markle.

Speaking on behalf of Cafe Casino, Ede told Showbiz Cheat Sheet, “Kate’s visible reaction towards anti-monarchy protesters who were shouting during the procession was extremely human and maternal. It was a rare glimpse of protective instinct, particularly as her children were present, and showed the human side of a mother as much as a future queen. The reality is that the boos weren’t really about Kate personally. The Princess of Wales remains one of the most popular members of the royal family, both in the U.K. and internationally.

“The protesters were expressing opposition to the institution of the monarchy rather than targeting her as an individual. However, when you’re sitting in a carriage with your children beside you, it’s unlikely you’ll separate those two things in the moment. The royal family is up against a lot of negativity and what made the reaction so interesting was that it felt incredibly authentic. Kate is usually the picture of composure and professionalism, but for a split second, we saw a protective mother reacting to a situation involving her children.”

Ede continued, “George, Charlotte, and Louis are growing up under extraordinary scrutiny and, while they are becoming increasingly comfortable in public, they are still young children hearing adults shouting and booing around them. The reason so many royal fans have rallied around Kate following the incident is because they saw something relatable. Most parents would instinctively react if they felt their children were being exposed to hostility, and that’s exactly what appeared to happen. It humanized her.”

He added, “I also think it would have been emotionally difficult for Kate on a personal level. Over the past couple of years, she has faced enormous public attention, speculation, and scrutiny while continuing to carry out her duties with dignity. To then have her children witness booing directed at the institution they are part of would naturally be uncomfortable.

“From a brand perspective, moments like this can often strengthen public affection rather than diminish it. The image people were left with wasn’t one of a royal under pressure, but of a devoted mother protecting her children while carrying out her public role. In many ways, it reinforced exactly why so many people admire her.”
