After playing his college football for the Michigan Wolverines, quarterback J.J. McCarthy was selected by the Minnesota Vikings with the 10th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

He sat out his entire rookie season due to injury but started for the team in 2025. After more injuries, he was eventually demoted to a back up then a third-string behind Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz.

When New York Giants starting quarterback Jaxson Dart went down early in the season, the Giants acquired McCarthy from the Vikings in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round draft pick. Veteran signal-caller Jameis Winston initially started in Dart’s place until Week 7, when head coach John Harbaugh named McCarthy the starter against the Houston Texans.

Now that McCarthy is playing under the bright lights in the Big Apple, people want to know as much as they can about him, including his life off the field. Here’s more about the athlete and his wife, Katya Kuropas.

McCarthy and Kuropas are high school sweethearts

Kuropas was born on Jan. 28, 2003. She and McCarthy met in high school and have been dating since Oct. 8, 2018, when they both attended Nazareth Academy near Chicago.

Although McCarthy transferred from Nazareth Academy to IMG Academy due to the cancellation of the football season at Nazareth during the COVID-19 pandemic, he and Kuropas remained together.

Over the years, the pair have not been shy about sharing their love for each other via social media as they have highlighted anniversaries and birthdays with sweet posts about each other.

On their third anniversary together in 2021, McCarthy expressed his gratitude for Kuropas’ unwavering support in an Instagram post, writing, “3 trips around the sun with the love of my life. I honestly do not even know where I would be without this girl in my life. I simply do not deserve her because of the kind of woman she is.

“The pureness in her heart and soul is just one [of] the many qualities that make this girl so incredible. I am beyond blessed and grateful for God bringing this woman into my life and I pray that she is by my side for years to come.”

When McCarthy and Kuropas got married

In January 2024, McCarthy proposed to his longtime girlfriend.

The two tied the knot in front of 60 friends and family in an outdoor ceremony at the luxury Zadun Los Cabos Ritz-Carlton in Mexico on April 11, 2026.

Other athletes in attendance included McCarthy’s former Vikings teammate Cam Bynum, his Michigan teammate Will Johnson, and Patriots quarterback Drake Maye along with his wife, Ann Michael.

How many children they have

Today, McCarthy and Kuropas have one child together.

In May 2025, the couple announced in a joint Instagram post that they were expecting a baby boy. Then in September, they shared the happy news that they had welcomed their son, Rome Micah McCarthy.

In the post they wrote, “Welcome to the world Rome Micah McCarthy. The sweetest, most perfect gift from God!! We are so unbelievably blessed to be your parents.”

The proud mom and dad have since shared with fans snaps of their little one on social media.
