Mary Cosby’s son, Robert Cosby Jr., died

On Monday, Feb. 23, police in Salt Lake City responded to a call for a possible overdose. Upon their arrival, it turned into a death investigation. Mary later confirmed that her son, Robert, had died.

“Our beloved son Robert Jr. has been called home to the Lord,” she told TMZ. “Though our hearts ache, we take comfort in God’s promise and in knowing he is finally at peace. We are grateful for your prayers and trust in the Lord to carry us through this time of sorrow.”

Robert was Mary’s only child.

Mary Cosby spoke about her son after his arrest in late 2025

In 2025, Robert was arrested and jailed for allegedly violating a restraining order against his estranged wife.

“[Her family] filed a restraining order against him, and he went back anyway, thinking that she wants him to come back and save her,” Mary said on the RHOSLC reunion. “I don’t know where he’s getting that from … delusional.”

While Mary said it was too difficult for her to visit him behind bars as she didn’t want to see him suffer, she admitted she felt relieved that he was away from drugs.

“I’m not worried about him,” she said. “I know he’s somewhere where he’s not using. At some point, I have to step back so that he can learn and he can make his own decisions, and unfortunately, he’s learning the hard way. But I’m OK with it.”

She said she spoke to him every day on the phone.

“He calls me every day,” she said. “I’m basically preaching to him. I’m like, ‘You’re going through this, but you have to realize that God is allowing it, and if God allowed it, then it’s for your good. This will help you to change, and you gotta change.’”

He spoke about his drug use on The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City

On the fifth season of RHOSLC, Robert spoke honestly about his drug use with Mary. He admitted he felt like he was at a “standstill” after completing a 30-day program.

“I’m not in that dark place, but, like, it’s still there, if that makes sense,” he said. “I just didn’t expect it to be like this. … You have to change who you are as a person. Like, you’re so used to doing something you do every day, and it’s a ritual. And then, you just come back home to where you used to do that ritual, and you’re not doing it anymore.”

During the show’s sixth season, Robert admitted he was still using drugs, though he was trying to stop.
