On Sunday, celebrities gathered for the Creative Arts Emmys ahead of the Primetime Emmys on September 14. The event ended with a handful of big winners, but one heartfelt win has everyone talking. Rob Reiner was honored with an Emmy Award months after his death. Reiner won Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his three-episode arc in Season 4 of FX’s The Bear.
No one walked onstage to collect the trophy. While Reiner’s son, Jake Reiner, has been more active online in recent months, he did not appear to be in the crowd to see his father take home the prize posthumously. Presenter Wendi McLendon-Covey accepted the award on his behalf. She offered a simple acknowledgment, telling the crowd, “We all wish he was here.”
Rob Reiner played Albert Schnur, a restaurant franchiser who mentors Ebraheim through the expansion of his shop. The role was one of Reiner’s final screen performances before his death. The Bear team paid tribute to Reiner months after his death in the finale. In the final moments of the show, Ebra signed off a call with Albert with “As you wish,” an emotional callback to Reiner’s movie, The Princess Bride. The term was used as a declaration of love and devotion in the film.
A historic win, and a family record broken
Rob Reiner’s posthumous win was just emotional; it was historic. Reiner’s previous Emmy win came way back in 1978, when he took home the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his work on All in the Family. His first win was in 1974 for the same show. The span between his 1978 win and this year’s posthumous win was 48 years. The award set a new record for the longest span between acting Emmy wins in the ceremony’s history.
The previous record was held by Rob’s own father, Carl Reiner, who waited 37 years between Emmy wins. The iconic actor picked up one win in 1958 for Caesar’s Hour. In 1995, he picked up a win in the guest actor category for his work on Mad About You.
Rob Reiner’s cause of death
Rob Reiner, along with his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, was found stabbed to death inside their Brentwood home on December 14. The attack reportedly occurred hours after the Reiners, along with their son, Nick, left a holiday party early after a dust-up. Their son, Nick, was arrested less than 24 hours after the discovery. He has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He has pleaded not guilty.
Nick Reiner’s legal battle is playing out publicly, with his request to access his trust fund to mount a defense dominating headlines. The 32-year-old is being held at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility. His next court appearance is set for September 15.
