Meghan Markle and Prince Harry may still be ‘very much in love,’ but they reportedly want very different lives. While speaking to The Royalist’s Tom Sykes, Dan Wakeford, founder of Celebrity Intelligence, said, “The ‘wildly unhappy’ came not from within their relationship in their life right now. It was their life in America they were wildly unhappy about.”

According to the Daily Beast, Wakeford first talked about the couple’s unhappiness in an April 2026 Celebrity Intelligence article. He cited a source who called Harry and Markle “wildly unhappy.” He later explained the claim to Sykes.

“They were wildly unhappy with how things had gone, and they hadn’t gone how they expected. I don’t think they could find—think of a way out of that. And so it’s very interesting,” he added.

The Sussexes moved to California in 2020 after stepping down as senior working royals. They built a life there with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. In August 2026, the family returned to the U.K. Harry and Markle are still non-working members of the royal family.

Wakeford said Harry seems happier after returning to Britain. But he doesn’t think Markle feels the same way. Wakeford noted, “The problem with this couple is you have two people with completely different goals in life and geographical, like, homes.”

Markle is a Los Angeles native. Meanwhile, Harry still has deep ties to Britain and the royal family. But Wakeford said it’s not just about home. According to him, his sources believe Harry and Markle are “very much in love.”

Still, he said they don’t always agree on what makes them happy. “They’re not on the same page with where they’re going in life, whether that’s living in England or living in America, whether that is philanthropy or a glamorous Hollywood lifestyle brand,” he said.

He added, “And so doing that as a couple—they oppose each other, really, of what to their core, makes them happy and their reasons for being.” Sykes also argued that love doesn’t always make a relationship work.

“I think we’ve all seen plenty of people who are madly in love and carried away with the whole thing who can’t make it work as a relationship, because the relationship is a very different kind of thing,” he said. Harry and Markle have also taken different paths since leaving royal life. Harry has spent a lot of time working on veterans, mental health, and recovery.

The Invictus Games remains his biggest project. He also works with BetterUp, WellChild, African Parks, and Travalyst. Markle, meanwhile, has built a career around media, lifestyle, business, and women’s issues. Her work includes Archewell Productions, Netflix projects, podcasts, and As Ever. She has also supported Smart Works and women’s education.

Moreover, where Harry and Markle will spend this year’s Christmas is still up in the air. According to a HeatWorld source, Harry wants to stay in Britain. Markle, on the other hand, is considering California. The couple is reportedly “not on the same page” over Christmas plans.
