Prince William is reportedly angry about Prince Harry’s link to Charles Spencer’s memoir about Princess Diana. An unnamed source said William thinks Harry knew about Swan Song: Diana, My Sister before it came out. The source told HeatWorld that Harry didn’t give William or King Charles a heads-up. 

The same insider called Harry a “rotten apple” in William’s view. However, Spencer said William and Harry found out about the book at the same time. Speaking to People, Diana’s brother said he kept the memoir under wraps while writing it. Only his wife, Professor Cat Spencer, and the publishers knew about it. 

Then, he told his nephews and sisters altogether. “So all four of them [William and Harry and Sarah and Jane], I told them exactly the same time. And I can say that Harry is completely fine about it,” Spencer said. 

Spencer said his sisters “were very surprised. They hadn’t seen it coming.” Spencer added, “I was going to hurt you either way, because I was either going to tell you and still write it how I wanted it. It wasn’t going to be a committee effort.” He also wanted his family to stay out of any controversy that might follow. 

“I wanted them to be able to put their hand up and say, ‘Well, we didn’t know he was doing it,’ in case there’s backlash or whatever. So they’re totally innocent parties in this. This is very much a brother’s view,” he noted.

The memoir looks back at Diana’s life, her marriage to then-Prince Charles and her death in 1997. Spencer said the upcoming 30th anniversary of Diana’s death also prompted him to finally tell his side. He sees the book as his own take on his sister’s life. The 62-year-old also linked it to the speech he gave at Diana’s funeral. 

“The aim of this book is to tell the truth about Diana from her brother’s perspective, just as I attempted to do when speaking at her funeral,” Spencer said. He added, “As with my eulogy, I want to speak on Diana’s behalf and do so in an openly positive way.”

Meanwhile, Harry reportedly had one question after hearing about the book. He asked Spencer, “I hope there’s nothing embarrassing about him in it.” Spencer told him, “There isn’t.” William and Harry both appeared in the memoir as Diana’s sons. Spencer said he didn’t go into their private lives.

However, soon after the book’s release, reporters started asking questions to the brothers. On September 22, William faced questions about the memoir during a visit to ActOne Cinema in Acton, west London. As he arrived, a reporter asked, “Sir how do you feel about your uncle’s book? Have you read it?”

But he didn’t respond. Harry also faced questions about it the previous day. He was arriving at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London for the WellChild Awards when reporters asked if he had spoken to his uncle. Harry did not respond either.
