Ryan Gosling’s ‘Gilmore Girls’ Audition Went so Badly That the Character Was Never Even Featured
A documentary about Gilmore Girls is in the works. While Lauren Graham isn’t attached to the project, plenty of other stars and crew members are, and they are talking freely, filling fans in on plenty of behind-the-scenes secrets. For example, a casting director sat down to chat about how bad Ryan Gosling bombed his Gilmore Girls audition when he was just starting out in the industry. The clip gives fans a sense of what they can expect from he upcoming documentary.
Ryan Gosling’s bad ‘Gilmore Girls’ audition will be discussed in an upcoming documentary
Ryan Gosling is a massive star now, but even an A-list actor has bad auditions every so often. Still, it sounds like Gosling’s worst audition was worse than most. A casting agent just revealed that Gosling’s audition for Gilmore Girls was so terrible that not only did he not get the role, but the character he auditioned for was scrapped altogether.
The New York Post obtained an exclusive clip from the upcoming Gilmore Girls documentary. The clip dives into the lore of Ryan Gosling’s terrible audition. Casting director Jami Rudofsky sat down with the filmmakers to discuss all the actors who walked through the casting doors. Rudofsky recalls Gosling’s audition with unprecedented clarity. That might be because he embarrassed her.
Rudofsky explains that she spoke highly of Gosling to the other casting agents, insisting he was extraordinary after seeing him audition elsewhere. He walked through the door and was awful, Rudofsky recalled. She said the other agents looked at her as if she were crazy. He wasn’t given a part or a callback, but Rudofsky insisted he would be something special someday. She was correct. As for why he bombed the audition, no one really knows. Rudofsky theorizes that a then-teenaged Gosling just wasn’t feeling the project.
What role was he auditioning for?
Ryan Gosling’s failed Gilmore Girls audition has been spoken about a few times over the years. Since the piece of Gilmore Girls trivia became common knowledge, fans have been debating what role he must have auditioned for. Theories have suggested he was supposed to be Dean Forrester (he was not) or that he was supposed to serve as another love interest for Rory Gilmore (also unlikely). It wasn’t nearly as interesting as all that.

According to Rudofsky, Gosling was auditioning for a tiny role. He was supposed to be a football player of some sort. When Gosling’s audition didn’t go well, the part was scrapped entirely. It all turned out fine, though. Apparently, the role was so small that it proved unimportant to the overall storyline. We never found out if Stars Hollow High or Chilton even had a football team.
In the end, all is well that ends well. The show was fine without Gosling, and he was fine without the show.
