Sam Asghari Responds to Britney Spears Calling Their Marriage Fake: ‘Very Real To Me’
Britney Spears’ life outside of the music studio and stages has always been a little bit messy. Troubled marriages. Conservatorships and mental health concerns have plagued the pop star along the way. Although she’s no longer under a conservatorship, her latest Instagram updates have felt somewhat unusual. One she uploaded on August 25 is getting a lot of attention. Britney Spears sat down to talk about her short-lived, ill-fated marriage to Sam Asghari, and she had absolutely nothing nice to say about the man.
Britney and Sam’s relationship timeline
Britney Spears and Sam Asghari’s relationship went Instagram official in early 2017, with Britney sharing photos of them together. They had met months earlier than that on the set of her music video, though. According to several sources, Spears and Asghari hit it off within minutes and began dating almost immediately.
For several years, their relationship seemed to flow pretty quietly, separate from the outside noise of her conservatorship. Asghari publicly defended his partner and called for the end of the conservatorship multiple times over the years. In 2021, as she was battling to dissolve the conservatorship, she and Asghari announced their engagement.
They married in an intimate ceremony attended by close family and friends in June 2022. While things seemed OK for a bit, it didn’t last long. In August 2023, Asghari filed for divorce. While it initially appeared to be an amicable split, Spears’ recent statements suggest otherwise.

Britney Spears and Sam Asghari split up two years ago, after just 14 months of marriage. The couple finalized their divorce more than a year ago. While their marriage was short, their relationship was longer than most of Spears’ courtships. In her world, however, the length of time you spend with a person doesn’t make the relationship important or real. At least, she doesn’t view her time with Asghari as “real.”
The controversial pop star took to Instagram on August 25 to chat. For reasons that are seemingly inexplicable, she opted to reflect on her marriage to Asghari while discussing the “hardest years of her life.” She went on to claim that she saw the marriage as a “fake distraction” while she was in a state of denial. She also mentioned that she wasn’t allowed to have contact with her sons at that time, although she didn’t specify who banned communication or why. The statements struck followers and fans as somewhat unusual. Apparently, Asghari concurs, and he doesn’t share Spears’ opinion.
He responds to the allegation
While Britney Spears had some pretty dismissive things to say about her relationship with Sam Asghari, he is opting to take the high road. People connected with the fitness trainer and model shortly after Spears’ Instagram update went viral and asked him how he felt about the situation. He told the outlet that he had a very different view of the time they spent together. He noted that, despite what Spears had to say, the marriage was ‘very real” to him, and that he was very much in love with her at the time.
Asghari went on to insist that he still has love for her and will always wish her well. He did not elaborate on Spears’ claim that she was not “allowed” contact with her sons while they were together. Asghari had always been outspoken about his desire to see Spears get her decision-making power back, so his public persona and what she’s claiming don’t seem to align.
It seems unlikely that we’ll ever hear Asghari comment on the allegation again, though. He seems interested in staying neutral, at least for now.
