Sara Ramirez Said It was ‘Exhausting’ Being Che Diaz
And Just Like That… season 3 opened without any mention of Che Diaz. The character won’t be included in season 3. Cynthia Nixon once said everyone agreed Che’s storyline had been completed. Still, fans think they may be the reason the non-binary comedian was unceremoniously dropped from the series. Sara Ramirez, the actor who took on the part, discussed the role back in 2023, revealing that it wasn’t an easy role to play. They called playing the character “exhausting.”
Sara Ramirez said playing Che Diaz was ‘exhausting’
Sara Ramirez may have felt a connection to Che Diaz due to their shared non-binary identity. Still, it wasn’t an easy role for them to take on. The part demanded an extroverted, larger-than-life persona that didn’t come easily for Ramirez, who insists they do not share Che’s personality. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor acknowledged how taxing it was to depict the character. They told the outlet that being Che Diaz was “absolutely exhausting.” Ramirez went on to explain that they found it difficult because they had to stay in an “extraverted mode” to portray the non-binary comedian successfully.

Ramirez might have found Che’s personality difficult to slip in and out of, but that’s likely not the only issue they faced because of the role. Surely, the job wasn’t made easier by the hordes of And Just Like That… viewers who picked apart the character’s every move. While Che wasn’t the only part of the reboot lambasted by original series purists, they did get a great deal of hate. The reason for the distaste was multifaceted. The character’s storyline didn’t thrill fans. Season 1 found them interloping in Miranda Hobbes and Steve Brady’s marriage. Season 2 made Che more likable, but all good will was gone when they broke up with Miranda.
Ramirez addressed the hate comments and their feelings toward all the criticism during the same interview. They stated, “I am not the fictional characters I have played… we live in a world increasingly hostile toward anyone who dares to free themselves from the gender binary.”
While fans were in agreement, the cast was not
While fans largely disliked the character of Che Diaz, the cast had very different thoughts about the character and Ramirez’s portrayal of them. Sarah Jessica Parker recently revealed she was shocked by all the negative commentary swirling about Che Diaz. Parker chatted with The Guardian recently about the evolution of Carrie Bradshaw and the Sex and the City franchise.

During the chat, she said she didn’t know fans hated Che until a friend told her. Parker said that she adored working with Ramirez and simply didn’t understand why there was so much hate. One might wonder how Parker could have missed all of the controversy. She admitted that after five decades in Hollywood, she has learned that it’s best not to read every negative thing written about a project.
