In a move that was inevitable amid growing pressure from the public and his own family, Prince Andrew finally announced that he would no longer use his Duke of York title.

The disgraced prince released a statement on Oct. 17 that read: “In discussion with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family. I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first. I stand by my decision five years ago to stand back from public life.

“With His Majesty’s agreement, we feel I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me. As I have said previously, I vigorously deny the accusations against me.”

Andrew giving up his dukedom meant that his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, wouldn’t be able to go by the Duchess of York anymore. But it seems Fergie is still eager to hold onto the title.

After changing her social media handle to exclude the word “duchess,” many fans pointed out that her banner image still shows “Duchess of York” in a photo for her Flora & Fern children’s book series.

The late Queen Elizabeth II gave Andrew and Sarah the York title on their wedding day in 1986. When they divorced 10 years later, Fergie lost her HRH status but retained her duchess title.

Only time will tell if Sarah scrubs her profile clean of what is now her former title.
