During Sean “Diddy” Combs’ sentencing hearing, his lawyers have their last chance to plead his case before Judge Arun Subramanian determines how much time Combs will spend behind bars. His defense team hopes that Subramanian will sentence Combs to just 14 months in prison and is portraying him as a changed man. In her presentation, Combs’ attorney, Nicole Westmoreland, got emotional when discussing Combs’ positive contributions to society.

During her presentation during Combs’ sentencing hearing, Westmoreland said Combs was a source of “inspiration” for many.

“Mr. Combs starting his own record label as a Black, young male back then was almost kind of jokeable. But he had the audacity to do it anyway,” Westmoreland said, per CNN. “This changed the industry, and it changed the culture, but more importantly, it changed countless individuals’ lives, because what people recognized is that if Mr. Combs could do it, then they could do it too.”

Her voice began to waver, and she sniffed as she grew more emotional. She commended him for working to uplift the Black community with his media companies. With audible emotion, she said she felt inspired when she saw him speak in Washington, D.C. several years ago.

“He said if you do not remember anything that I’m saying today, remember as you accomplish your dreams, don’t forget to help others, and that changed my life,” Westmoreland said.

She insisted that Combs’ time in jail has changed him. She hopes that Subramanian will take this into account when delivering his sentence.

“He’s determined. He’s focused, and he’s remorseful,” she said. “I can look the court in the eye and tell you that he’s remorseful because I spent almost every single day speaking to Mr. Combs. Your honor, he gets it, plain and simple.”
