Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs Could Serve Even Less Time in Prison Than Expected
After a trial over the summer, Sean “Diddy” Combs received a prison sentence of 50 months, or roughly four years. Both the prosecution and the defense were unsatisfied with the length of time he will spend behind bars, and many members of the public believe the sentence is too light. According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, though, Combs could spend even less time in prison than anticipated.
Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs could spend less time behind bars than expected
Ahead of Combs’ sentencing, the prosecution pushed for 11 years in prison, while the defense wanted 14 months. Judge Arun Subramanian thought 11 years was too long, but believed Combs needed to spend more time behind bars than the defense wanted.
“The need for general deterrence warrants a significant sentence,” Subramanian said, per E! News. “A substantial sentence must be given to serve as an example to abusers and victims alike.”
Combs’ time in jail ahead of trial counts as time served towards his sentence. A spokesperson from the Bureau of Prisons told Business Insider that Combs could get even more time knocked off his sentence.
Inmates sentenced to more than 12 months in prison can receive 54 days of “good conduct time” off their sentence each year. Combs could knock six months off his sentence with good conduct time and get out of prison on May 8, 2028.
People think he should spend more time in prison
While Combs and his attorneys are likely celebrating this news, many people don’t think he should get out of prison this early.
“That’s not nearly long enough,” wrote one Reddit user.
“Should be 2082 at least,” added someone else.
Many people felt Combs’ sentence was unfair to his victims. A number of them have expressed fear about what Combs will do when he gets out of prison.
“What a joke,” one person wrote. “Honestly I’d be terrified if I was Cassie or his other victims. He should be locked away forever.”
“That’s a slap in the face to all of his victims,” wrote another person. “The injustice system strikes again. Isn’t he paying like 500,000 in restitution? PENNIES.”
Combs will pay a $500,000 fine and have five years of supervised release once his prison sentence is over.
His attempts to get a pardon appear to have fallen apart
Combs and his lawyers initially wanted him to avoid prison altogether by securing a presidential pardon. Donald Trump said that he was considering a pardon. Sources also said the White House was poised to review Combs’ case. After backlash, though, an official said there was zero truth to this rumor.
“There is zero truth to the TMZ report, which we would’ve gladly explained had they reached out before running their fake news,” the official told NBC News in a statement. “The president, not anonymous sources, is the final decider on pardons and commutations.”
Combs’ lawyers also wanted him to serve out his sentence at Fort Dix in New Jersey, but Subramanian declined to make this recommendation.
