Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift have the Jonas Brothers to thank for their years-long friendship. The pair met in 2008 when they both dated members of the boy band. While the romantic relationships ended, their friendship has endured. Gomez joked that her friendship with Swift was the best thing to come out of her relationship.

Selena Gomez is glad she became friends with Taylor Swift

In 2008, Gomez dated Nick Jonas. At the same time, Swift dated Joe Jonas.

“Taylor and I dated the Jonas Brothers,” Gomez said on the Therapuss with Jake Shane podcast (via People). “I dated Nick, and she dated Joe. And everything was — it was cute, we were young.”

While Gomez is on friendly enough terms with Nick, she said the greatest thing to come out of their romance was a friendship with Swift.

“We all know and love each other now, and it’s so cute,” she said. “We don’t know what we were doing. She and I like to say the best thing we got out of those relationships was each other because it was really sweet.”

When their respective relationships ended, Gomez said she and Swift turned to each other for support. She said they became best friends in the process.

“And then we just stuck around for all the ups and downs that came after, and here we are now 16 years later,” she said.

“Taylor gave an extremely heartfelt speech at the wedding,” a source told Us Weekly. “She went into depth and talked about how over the years she saw Selena on the floor crying, mentioning exes, Selena having a broken heart, and saying how happy she is that Selena has Benny [Blanco] now.”

Swift, who is also engaged, said, “It is a best friend’s dream for her best friend to find someone like Benny and is so happy for her.”

The ‘Reputation’ singer’s romance with Joe Jonas didn’t end well

While Gomez said she still knew and loved Nick Jonas, Swift did not always feel that way about Joe. She has publicly blasted him for the way he broke up with her.

“Some day, I’m gonna find somebody really, really, really great, who’s right for me …” she said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “When I find that person that is right for me, he’ll be wonderful, and when I look at that person, I’m not even gonna be able to remember the boy who broke up with me over the phone in 25 seconds when I was 18.”

Jonas defended himself against Swift’s claims about the brevity of the call.

“For those who have expressed concern over the ’27 second’ phone call, I called to discuss feelings with the other person,” he said on his MySpace (via People). “Those feelings were obviously not well received. I did not end the conversation. Someone else did. Phone calls can only last as long as the person on the other end of the line is willing to talk.”
