Selena Gomez Once Told Fans to Buy a One Direction Album Instead of Justin Bieber’s ‘Purpose’
In 2015, Selena Gomez made waves by promoting the One Direction album Made in the A.M. While this doesn’t seem like a big deal, she sparked drama because it had the same release date as Justin Bieber’s Purpose. When a fan asked Gomez which album they should buy, Gomez made her point of view very clear.
Selena Gomez promoted a One Direction album over a Justin Bieber album
On Nov. 13, 2015, Made in the A.M. and Purpose were released. At this point, Bieber and Gomez were in an off period of their tumultuous, years-long romance.
During this time, a Selena Gomez fan account posted about which album they should get for a friend.
“My friend likes jb and 1d but idk which one to get him?” they wrote. “Purpose or Made in the AM?”
Gomez herself commented with her opinion: “Made in the AM,” she wrote.
Several minutes later, she returned to the post to make her point again, this time in all caps: “MADE IN THE AM.”
Shortly before this, Gomez and One Direction’s Niall Horan were reportedly spotted kissing at Jenna Dewan’s birthday party.
“It seemed like they were a couple,” a source told Us Weekly.
It’s not clear if Gomez’s support for Made in the A.M. had more to do with her close friendship with Horan or her bitter relationship with Bieber.
People say they miss celebrity moments like Selena Gomez promoting One Direction’s album
On the tenth anniversary of Gomez’s promotion of Made in the A.M., many people looked back fondly on this type of celebrity messiness.
“I miss celebrities just being openly messy on Twitter,” wrote one Reddit user.
People also found it hilarious that Gomez doubled back to emphasize her point.
“Obsessed with her doubling back around to say it a second time just in case,” wrote one person.
“I like that she felt the need to comment again 12m later,” added another commenter.
A number of people also asserted their belief that Gomez was right. They saw Made in the A.M. as a better album than Purpose.
Her relationship with Justin Bieber has always been rocky
At that point, Gomez and Bieber had already broken up twice. They would go on to reunite at least one more time before finally ending things for good in 2018. Shortly after the release of Purpose, however, Bieber said he would always have love for Gomez.
“[She] is someone I love dearly,” he told Access Hollywood. “I’m never going to stop loving her. I’m never going to stop checking in on her. I don’t think if you end a relationship, you should end that, unless it was super toxic and you guys were hurting each other physically or mentally. We always respected each other and we still respect each other.”
By early 2016, Gomez said she wanted to be done talking about Bieber for good. Still, they went on to have many, many more headline-making dramatic moments.
