Shakira Draws 400,000 Spectators to Record-Breaking Show
Shakira is proving that her appeal continues to grow, decades after she launched an international music career. The pop star’s current tour is turning out to be one of her most successful. She even capped off the Mexican leg of the tour with a record-breaking free concert in Mexico City. The number of spectators who piled into the public square to hear the Te Felicito singer is pretty mind-boggling.
Shakira brings a record-breaking crowd to Mexico City
Shakira just capped the Mexican leg of her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour with a show in the Zócalo in Mexico City. The show, free to all spectators, drew the largest crowd the public square has ever seen. According to Billboard, 400,000 residents traveled to the area to listen ot the famed pop star belt out her most popular tunes. It is the second time she’s offered a free concert in the area.
The recent show capped off a rather successful leg, with the artist selling out multiple venues. Shakira will take a short break before heading to the Middle East to wrap up the world tour with a handful of shows. She will end the tour with nearly 100 performances stretched across multiple continents. The tour will conclude in Egypt on April 7.
These artists have drawn massive crowds, too
Shakira’s feat should be celebrated. After all, drawing so many spectators to a public square is a symbol of just how enduring her career has been. She is also in good company with her massive crowd. While the artist’s draw is the largest that the Zócalo has ever seen for a free concert, there have been other massive shows in recent years. Madonna and the Rolling Stones drew over 1 million spectators at shows on Copacabana Beach, while Juan Gabriel and Los Fabulosos Cadillacs appealed to many onlookers at the Zócalo.
In 2024, Madonna’s record-breaking concert on Copacabana Beach drew 1.6 million fans, considered the largest standalone concert in modern history. It was also free. Nearly 20 years earlier, the Rolling Stones drew between 1.5 million and 2 million onlookers to the same beach for a concert.
While the Zócalo in Mexico City can’t accommodate that many onlookers, the public square is known for drawing massive crowds. Shakira’s show, attended by 400,000, is the largest, but Juan Gabriel, a legendary Mexican artist, saw about 350,000 people pile into the square for a New Year’s Day concert back in 2000. Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, an Argentinian rock band, piqued the interest of 300,000 spectators in the same square in 2023.
