The lengthy saga of Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham has entered a new chapter. Several years after Nicks announced she could never work with him again, the former couple teamed up to release their 1973 album Buckingham Nicks. While promoting it, Nicks revealed that she recently talked with Buckingham about their past.

Stevie Nicks revealed she’s talking to Lindsey Buckingham again

Before joining Fleetwood Mac, Nicks and Buckingham made music as a duo. They initially worked together in a band, Fritz, but dropped the rest of the group when they failed to get a record deal.

“We loved these guys,” Nicks said, per People. “So we were not at all happy about that, but there was nothing we could do … It was our first super disappointment in the music business.”

She said that this decision pushed her closer to Buckingham. They began a romantic relationship.

“It drove us together, because we just couldn’t figure it out,” she said. “And then we fell in love with each other, and that was it.”

By the time they fell in love, Nicks and Buckingham had known each other for some time. They met at a high school party. While reminiscing about this, Nicks mentioned that she’d recently discussed the first time they saw each other with Buckingham. This is significant because the pair was not on speaking terms in recent years.

“Lindsey and I started talking about it last night,” she said. “This whole thing seems really like yesterday to us.”

They released their joint album this year

Though Nicks and Buckingham would go on to have successful careers, Buckingham Nicks did not perform well. The album went out of print for decades. That is, until this year. The former couple teamed up to reissue their first album.

“[We] knew what we had as a duo, two songwriters that sang really well together,” Nicks wrote in the liner notes (per Rolling Stone). “And it was a very natural thing, from the beginning.”

Buckingham added that the album still sounds good to him all these years later.

“It stands up in a way you hope it would, by these two kids who were pretty young to be doing that work,” he wrote.

Stevie Nicks previously said she wanted nothing to do with Lindsey Buckingham

Nicks and Buckingham have made major strides since 2018, when their relationship broke down seemingly irreparably. Fleetwood Mac fired Buckingham, for which he blamed Nicks. She responded by saying she never wanted to work with him again.

“Following an exceedingly difficult time with Lindsey at MusiCares in New York, in 2018, I decided for myself that I was no longer willing to work with him,” she told Rolling Stone. “I could publicly reflect on the many reasons why, and perhaps I will do that someday in a memoir, but suffice it to say we could start in 1968 and work up to 2018 with a litany of very precise reasons why I will not work with him.”

Given their history, though, it’s not all that surprising that they’ve been able to get back on speaking terms.
