Cynthia Erivo is the face behind multiple popular GIFs, and another one is popping up all over social media. Anybody on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter) is likely to see a GIF of Erivo stepping backward with a look of utter shock on her face. People are using it for all sorts of reactions, but the Wicked actor was responding to very real astonishment in the brief clip.

In 2024, Erivo wore a black statement hat to the London premiere of Wicked and realized she’d left it behind in the theater. A year later, though, it came back into her possession.
Erivo was out when a fan named Clara approached the Elphaba actor and revealed she’d found the hat while at the London premiere.
“I kept the hat for a year, and I just wanted to tell her myself and I didn’t know how to get a hold of her,” Clara said in a TikTok video. “She’s getting the hat back today. I put it in this lovely bag and I’m giving it back.”
When Clara told Erivo she had the hat, she responded with stunned disbelief and stepped backwards. As she realized Clara really did have the hat, she became joyfully relieved.
“May I have it back, please? I thought I had lost it forever,” Erivo said. “Oh my goodness, you’re a lifesaver.”
Erivo later posted a picture with the hat on Instagram and thanked Clara in the caption.
