Sydney Sweeney appears to be taking a lot of heat right now, but she still has fans in at least one demographic: Republican men. Sweeney has found herself at the center of a controversy that began with a denim ad and ended with her seeming refusal to denounce white supremacy. Though Sweeney isn’t all that popular with some groups of people, men support her more than others.

Republican men are among Sydney Sweeney’s biggest fans

According to a new poll by Overton Insights shared with Showbiz Cheat Sheet, Sweeney isn’t as unpopular as the current backlash against her makes it seem, at least among some groups. Overall, 32% of voters view Sweeney positively, while 20% have a negative opinion of her. Men view her 25 points more favorably than women, who are evenly divided at 22% positive and 22% negative.

Sweeney is also more popular with Republicans than Democrats. Overton found that 44% of Republican responders view Sweeney favorably, while only 22% of Democrats view her favorably. More Democrat responders view the Euphoria actor negatively. There is a 35-point split between the opinions of Democrats and Republicans.

Sweeney herself registered as a Republican in Florida ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

She recently found herself at the center of controversy

The differing opinions of Sweeney likely have a lot to do with her recent controversies. Earlier this year, she appeared in an ad campaign for American Eagle with the slogan, “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.”

“Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color,” she says in one ad. “My jeans are blue.”

Many people, including other celebrities, criticized the campaign for using rhetoric associated with eugenics. GQ asked Sweeney to comment on the backlash.

“Is there something that you want to say about the ad itself?” interviewer Katherine Stoeffel asked. “The criticism of the content was basically that, maybe specifically in this political climate, white people shouldn’t joke about genetic superiority.”

Sweeney declined to make a statement one way or the other.

“I think that when I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear,” she said.

Unsurprisingly, this sparked further backlash.

Two leading Republicans expressed their support for Sydney Sweeney

Amid the backlash, Donald Trump threw his support behind Sweeney after learning that she is a registered Republican.

“Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the ‘HOTTEST’ ad out there,” he wrote on Truth Social. “It’s for American Eagle, and the jeans are ‘flying off the shelves.’ Go get ‘em Sydney!”

JD Vance also spoke in support of Sweeney and criticized those who took issue with the ad.

“My political advice to the Democrats is to continue to tell everybody who thinks Sydney Sweeney is attractive is a Nazi,” he said, per Yahoo!. “I mean, it actually reveals something pretty interesting about the Dems though, which is that you have a normal all-American beautiful girl doing like a normal jeans ad.”

Sweeney said that she found it “surreal” that Trump and Vance spoke about her.
