NFL players usually save major personal milestones for the offseason, but Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie Emeka Egbuka isn’t willing to wait to announce his big news any longer. While the Bucs’ season continues to hang in the balance of week 18’s results, Egbuka is prepping for what’s to come in his personal life. He has announced his engagement.

Emeka Egbuka announces his engagement

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are still hanging onto the hopes of a playoff run, albeit narrowly. No matter what happens after Sunday, though, Emeka Egbuka has something to celebrate. The rookie wideout had a breakout season, and now he’s looking to take the next step with his love. He took to Instagram ahead of Saturday’s game against the Carolina Panthers to announce his engagement.

Egbuka shared photos of his beachside proposal on January 2, just one day before he took the field to try to help extend his team’s season. Egbuka and his new fiancée, soccer player Laney Matriano, shared a series of photos showing Egbuka down on one knee.

It is unclear how long the duo has been a couple or how they met, but based on their Instagram activity, they may have begun dating last spring. The pair didn’t meet in college. Egbuka attended the Ohio State University before entering the NFL draft. Matriano, who is a native of Ohio, played soccer at Notre Dame. She has documented her collegiate career, including her final game, via Instagram. Egbuka is originally from Tacoma, Washington.

Fans and the organization flooded the comments

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers organization might be focused on heading to the playoffs, but they still had time to send out a congratulations to their rising star. The Bucs slid into Egbuka’s Instagram comments to share their warmest congratulations.

Former OSU teammate, TreVeyon Henderson, also popped in to offer his well-wishes, as did Brandon Inniss, who could be a late-round draft pick. Matriano’s teammates also slid into the comments to send their love. Bucs fans even took some time out to recognize the milestone, though many hope Egbuka uses the adrenaline from his relationship status change to fuel their playoff hopes. The couple has yet to announce any additional plans.
