Are Taylor Swift and Lena Dunham Still Friends?
When Taylor Swift formed her “squad” of female friends, Lena Dunham became a notable member. Swift was a huge fan of Dunham’s show, Girls, and befriended her after Dunham posted about her music. Are they still friends years after they first bonded?
Taylor Swift and Lena Dunham have been friends for years
Swift and Dunham became friends after Dunham posted about Swift’s music on Twitter. Though Swift worried Dunham wasn’t serious, she still reached out.
“I was really scared she was being ironic, but I decided to follow her anyway, just in case. Within five minutes I had a direct message from her. Let me see if I still have it,” she told Rolling Stone in 2014. “I still have it! She said, ‘I am so excited about the prospect of being friends with you that I added the adjective best in front of it.’ ‘The idea that you like my show is so thrilling, and I can’t wait to lavish you with praise in person.’”
Since then, Dunham and her former partner, Jack Antonoff, broke up and Swift continues to work closely with him. This doesn’t seem to have impacted her friendship with Dunham, though. Dunham said she was incredibly protective of Swift in 2024.
“I’m always very careful to be protective of her in every single way,” Dunham told The New Yorker. “Probably the two things I get asked most in life are ‘What is Taylor like?’ and ‘Can I have tickets to the Eras Tour?’ And usually my answer to both things is no, but I will say that she’s everything that you would want her to be. She’s kind, she’s devoted, she’s introspective, she’s emotional, she’s funny as f***. I guess my feeling sometimes is, Isn’t she giving us enough, guys?”
Swift was even a bridesmaid in Dunham’s 2021 wedding. Swift gave a little insight into their relationship by speaking about one of the quirky ways they spent time together. They loved to wear white nightgowns together.
“This is a thing me and Lena have,” she said. “We wear them during the day and look like pioneer women, fresh off the Oregon Trail.”
Swift still works with the ‘Girls’ creator’s ex
Swift has worked with Antonoff on every album she has released since 1989 in 2014. She has spoken very highly of him.
“Sometimes he sits at the piano and we both just start ad-libbing and the song seems to create itself,” she told The New York Times. “His excitement and exuberance about writing songs is contagious.”
She said she wouldn’t trust anyone who didn’t love him as much as she did.
“He’s an absolute joy. That’s why everyone loves him,” she said. “I personally wouldn’t trust someone who didn’t.”
Lena Dunham spoke reverently about Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour
In 2023, Dunham attended Swift’s Eras Tour. Swift dedicated the song “Forever & Always” to Dunham for her birthday.
“This is a request from my friend Lena. It’s her birthday today, so I’m absolutely going to grand that request and also wish her a happy birthday,” Swift told the audience, per Billboard. “She wanted to hear — and she’s here tonight, that’s also important. I’m not just doing this to send to her later. She wanted to hear ‘Forever & Always.’”
Dunham attended again in 2024.
