After Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce announced their engagement, many people began speculating about whether or not they will get a prenup. The celebrity couple is worth a staggering amount of money; Swift alone is worth over $1 billion. As a result, they will almost certainly get a prenup. A lawyer said the complicated details of any pre-nuptial agreement will likely shock people.

A pre-nuptial agreement is a legal contract between a couple before marriage that outlines how they will divide their assets in the event of divorce or death. They can be useful for average people, but celebrities find them essential. Gideon Alper, an attorney at Alper Law, shared why a prenup is important for Swift and Kelce.

“Prenups are not just about dividing money. For celebrities, they cover intellectual property, lifestyle rules, even who gets the pets,” he said. “With Swift and Kelce, the stakes are enormous, and the clauses could be unlike anything the public expects.”

He said that Swift, who is worth over $1 billion, and Kelce, who is a multimillionaire, will have to protect themselves before tying the knot.

“For ordinary couples, prenups usually cover homes, debt, and shared savings,” Alper said. “But when one person is one of the world’s most successful musicians and the other an NFL star, it becomes risk management on a completely different level. The public might be shocked at the detail – but for celebrities, it’s essential.”

Alper predicts that a prenup between Swift and Kelce could have a number of hyper-specific clauses. As Swift is a successful singer, she could include song royalties protection to protect future royalties and ensure her intellectual property is solely her own. They could also include a future earnings firewall to guarantee that their future endeavors remain separate assets.

Alper noted that there were other potential clauses that could surprise people. He said they could include luxury spending caps, which would limit joint spending. In the event of a divorce, they could include a clause that prevents people from selling tell-all books or recordings about their relationship. They could also include a breakup bonus clause that gives each of them a lump-sum payment if the marriage lasts a certain amount of time.

The couple is reportedly not planning their wedding yet

While people are making predictions about their upcoming wedding, Swift and Kelce reportedly haven’t given it much thought.

“Taylor and Travis have been in celebration mode ever since the engagement,” a source close to the couple told People. “They are not in the wedding planning phase yet.”
