Taylor Swift Worried Her Songwriting Would ‘Dry Up’ Amid Romance With Travis Kelce
Taylor Swift’s songwriting is often the most complimented part of her music, but she worried this would change after meeting Travis Kelce. Swift said she is happy in the relationship, which she worried would be problematic for her art. She thought that her new relationship could dry up her songwriting.
Taylor Swift said she worried about her songwriting
Swift’s latest album, The Life of a Showgirl, has happier themes than the ones that came before it. The album was a massive financial success, but she once worried that she wouldn’t be able to achieve much while she was happy.
“I used to have this dark fear that if I ever were truly happy and free, being myself and nurtured by a relationship, what happens if the writing just dries up?” she asked on BBC Radio 1. “What if writing is directly tied to my torment and pain?”
With Showgirl, she said she realized that her fears weren’t based in reality. She felt that the album was strong.
“It turns out, that’s not the case at all, and we just were catching lightning in a bottle with this record,” she wrote. “But it’s nice because you’re coming from a place of happiness and love, you can go back to those places. You can look forward to other things.”
She said her album reflected a happy period in her life
Swift worked on The Life of a Showgirl in the midst of her relationship with Kelce and her Eras Tour. She said she wanted to capture this joyful period in her life.
“This album is about what was going on behind the scenes in my inner life during this tour, which was so exuberant and electric and vibrant,” she said on Kelce’s New Heights podcast. “It just comes from, like, the most infectiously joyful, wild, dramatic place I was in in my life.”
She wanted the songs to feel energetic and “infectious.” Kelce said he loved the new sound.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to hear every single song on here, so I know they’re all 12 bangers,” he said, adding, “It’s a lot more upbeat … like fun, pop excitement.… It’s a complete 180 from a lot of the songs on Tortured Poets.”
Not long after she announced her latest album, Swift and Kelce got engaged.
Taylor Swift’s songwriting recently earned her a prestigious honor
Swift’s lyrics recently got her into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. At 36 years old, she has become the youngest woman to achieve this honor. She said that she usually writes her songs in the middle of the night.
“It’s usually in the middle of the night,” she told CBS Sunday Morning. “Or if I’m trying to get to sleep and I can’t and then I get an idea. And I’m, like, ‘Well, I’m not tired anyway!’ And then kind of wander over here.”
Swift joins fellow nominees Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, Christopher “Tricky” Stewart, Alanis Morissette, Terry Britten and Graham Lyle, Kenny Loggins, and Walter Afanasieff.
