Teresa Giudice Blames Her ‘the Real Housewives’ Fame for Jail Time
Teresa Giudice was convicted of fraud and served jail time. The legal process and her incarceration, then her then-husband’s incarceration, played out in front of Bravo cameras for The Real Housewives of New Jersey. Now, 11 years, several more reality TV seasons, a divorce and a remarriage later, she’s still not ready to take accountability for the situation. Giudice recently suggested her reality TV stardom was, ultimately, what led to her prison stint.
How did she end up in prison?
Teresa Giudice and her then-husband, Joe Giudice, were charged with conspiracy, bankruptcy fraud, mail fraud, and wire fraud in 2013. The charges stemmed from allegations that they concealed income and submitted false loan applications to obtain $5 million in loans and mortgages.
Both pleaded guilty in 2014. Teresa was sentenced to 15 months and ultimately served 11 months. Joe served a longer sentence before being deported to Italy in 2019. His sentence began after hers to ensure their four daughters, all minors at the time, still had one parent at home while they served their time. The couple divorced in 2020.
The entire legal journey played out for Bravo, but Teresa insists she never expected that the legal drama would actually land her in jail. She’s made several claims over the years to suggest Bravo was to blame for her legal troubles. The most recent comments came last month.
Teresa Giudice thinks being on Bravo hurt her case
In August, Teresa Giudice sat down for an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. While the roundtable-style interview included several Bravo stars, Teresa’s prison stint was heavily discussed. During the chat, Teresa insisted that “being a celebrity made me go to jail.” She went on to explain that she felt like she had been used as an example. Teresa theorizes that without her celebrity status, jail time wouldn’t have been on the table.
Teresa doubled down on the claim. She even went on to insist that she had absolutely nothing to do with the fraud that eventually landed her in jail. She said that belief was why she allowed cameras to follow the process. In fact, it was the reason why she had initially wanted to go to trial rather than take a plea. “I know I didn’t do anything. I know I wasn’t a criminal; I went to a closing. That’s all I did. I went to a refinance for a home for a closing. That’s what I did,” she said.
She’s made similar claims in the past
While Teresa Giudice’s latest claims about her conviction struck Bravo fans as odd, it is actually not the first time she’s made such claims. She discussed the conviction in 2022 at BravoCon, telling audiences there that Judge Esther Salas treated her more harshly because of her public profile: “I got used as an example… because I was on TV — if I was just a regular housewife, I probably wouldn’t have went to jail.”
In a separate podcast interview, Teresa even suggested that her time on The Real Housewives of New Jersey may have been the catalyst for the government’s case against her. She half-jokingly suggested the premiere episode put a spotlight on her financial situation when she was shown shopping for furniture with massive stacks of cash. That scene, while it did happen, was never mentioned during her legal tribulations.
Teresa has since remarried, though financial troubles appear to be following her. Her ex-husband, Joe Giudice, lives in the Bahamas. He is in a relationship with an unknown woman.
