TikTok Star Davon Moseley Shares His Go-To Holiday Side Dish (Exclusive)

We sat down and chatted with Moseley recently, and he revealed that in his kitchen, you will not find sugar in grits. Moseley explained that to him, grits will always be a savory dish, and the addition of sugar just feels a bit off. Still, he insists, food is a unique experience, and each person is entitled to their own opinion.  He said, “I think grits is a savory dish, but you know, people like what they like.”

Moseley is not alone in his thinking. According to several surveys, about 65% of people consider grits savory. Food purists, especially those with ties to Mississippi, Georgia, and Alabama, prefer their grits with butter, salt, or cheese. Mid-Atlantic and Midwestern foodies are more likely to turn their grits sweet with sugar, honey, or even maple syrup. While sweet grits are still less popular than savory options, the trend is growing, just not for Moseley.

The TikTok chef still believes in blending new flavors, though

Whether you share Moseley’s take on grits or disagree entirely, there is surely a flavor profile to fit your preferences within Let’s Get Into It. The acclaimed content creator has a few favorites from his own cookbook that prove he is not afraid to stray from traditional flavor combinations.

He shared that his favorite recipe in the book is his Korean BBQ Cheesesteak. Moseley said he wanted to include a cheesesteak to honor the Philadelphia area, but also wanted to ensure it was a bit different. He took flavors found in traditional Korean Bulgogi and married them with a classic cheesesteak. The cheesesteak recipe isn’t the only one that marries two cultural dishes. The classic New York staple, the chopped cheese, gets a Caribbean twist in one recipe.

There are dozens of other recipes to try out in Let’s Get Into It. The book is now available for purchase at bookstores everywhere.
