In Marty Supreme, Timothée Chalamet’s character navigates chaos and violence. According to Chalamet, his experience on set was also a bit stressful. He admitted that he had more than one concern about his safety while shooting the Oscar-nominated film.

Timothée Chalamet said he worried about electrocution while filming ‘Marty Supreme’

In one scene in Marty Supreme, Chalamet’s character, Marty Mauser, falls through the floor of a motel bathroom while using the tub. Chalamet talked about the shot in a Q&A with Robert Downey Jr.

“I remember reading that thinking, ‘Man, with any other project that might be the thing, what is this?’ ” Chalamet said (per People). “I also think those are the things that excite [director Josh Safdie] the most in filming. And then I’m there naked with the appropriate … I don’t know. I only know the dirty way of saying it, the c*** sock. I don’t know how else to say it.”

Chalamet said that while considering the full bathtub, he began to worry about his safety. There was a nearby lighting set up that he worried might fall in the water.

“Josh was so excitable that day and loving it. And we’re in the bathtub,” he added. “It’s practical. There’s water. And I look up and there’s lights that are hanging off our rig basically. I pulled Josh aside. I was like, ‘Man, has this been properly done? It’s not going to collapse in the water? It’s not how I want to go out.’”

Luckily, they shot the scene without issue.

He admitted a fellow actor threatened him on set

During the motel scene, Chalamet acted alongside a non-professional actor. Safdie often casts non-actors in his films.

“I won’t say who, but in that motel sequence, there are a lot of non-actors … that I find it really thrilling to work with, but sometimes it would take multiple takes to really get something out of them,” Chalamet said (per People). “And I’m really getting in the guy’s face, and I’m really trying to get him angry with me. I was saying to Josh, ‘He’s not getting angry with me, he’s not getting angry with me.’”

The actor grew angry, but at Chalamet, not his character.

“I did another take, and then the guy said, ‘I was just in jail for 30 years. You really don’t want to fuck with me. You don’t want to see me angry,’” Chalamet said. “I said to Josh, ‘Holy s***, who do you have me opposite, man?’”

Timothée Chalamet is hoping for an Oscar for his role in ‘Marty Supreme’

Chalamet has picked up a number of wins on the awards circuit for his role in Marty Supreme. He received an Oscar nomination for the role, and admitted he would love to win. He said he wanted to help the movie — and the industry at large — in any way he could, including by winning awards.

“All these award things, they supplement the movie,” he said (per Variety). “I’m not going to turn this into a monologue about the crisis of theaters and stuff, but when you go to an awards show, everyone’s participating in an advertisement for each other — in the best sense of the word, I’m not saying that in a malicious way.”

He added that he did not want people to think he was desperate for the award, though.

“I don’t want it to be misinterpreted that the world is in the condition it’s in and I’m going to bed like, ‘F*** man, I need that [Oscar].’ You know, I’m living on planet Earth.”

Chalamet has previously received Oscar nominations for Call Me By Your Name and A Complete Unknown.
