Actors Timothée Chalamet and Michael B. Jordan both attended the 2026 Actor’s Awards (formerly known as the SAG Awards), both brought their mothers to the ceremony, and both were nominated in the same category. But the big story is that Jordan won the award for Best Actor, beating out Chalamet, who was expected to take home the hardware.

When Jordan won for his role in Sinners, some fans took to social media claiming that Chalamet appeared to be “annoyed” that Jordan won in the category the Marty Supreme star thought was his. However, an expert carefully watched Chalamet’s reaction and says that’s not what’s going on.

Expert breaks down Chamalet’s reaction to not winning the award

Darren Stanton is a body language and behavioral expert with a degree in psychology. He previously worked as a police officer and used his expertise to uncover the truth when interviewing hundreds of suspects. He later moved into media and TV as a consultant and has been dubbed the “Human Lie Detector.”

Speaking on behalf of Covers, Stanton told Showbiz Cheat Sheet, “Some people seemed to think Timothée Chalamet appeared annoyed at having lost. This is not the case — he lost very graciously and seemed genuinely happy that Michael B. Jordan won.

“He was shocked not to have won — you could see that flash across his face — but after that brief moment, his smiles were genuine. There were crow’s feet and his eyes were fully engaged in the smile. He wasn’t angry Michael won, perhaps just readjusting after expecting to win himself.”

Expert says even Jordan couldn’t believe he won

Stanton also talked about what Jordan did that showed how absolutely stunned he was after his name was called, explaining, “The win was a total surprise for Michael B. Jordan. He dropped his head instantly and you could see him furrowing his brow.

“When people are feigning surprise, they often have their heads up to show off their shock. But the way his head dropped instantly and his eyes closed showed he was overwhelmed and genuinely shocked, almost trying to quickly process all the emotions that just hit him.”

Stanton previously spoke about Jordan’s reaction to watching Chamalet win at the 2026 Critics’ Choice Awards in January and believes that evening Jordan “didn’t look too impressed” with his fellow actor’s speech.

According to the expert, “Michael B. Jordan didn’t look too impressed during Timothée’s speech. There was a moment when the camera panned to him; it almost looked like he was flashing contempt. When you look at his left cheek, it’s something you call a bilateral smile, which is linked to smugness and contempt. In this context, it just seems that Michael wanted Timothée to get on with it.

“I get the impression that he thought he was overdoing it slightly. There might be some elements of jealousy, given Michael’s slightly sarcastic expression. But from what’s clear, it seems that something did bother him during Timothée’s speech.”
