Travis Kelce Shared Why He Wants His Marriage to Look Different Than His Parents’
Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift are headed for marriage. The couple just announced their engagement in a joint post, much to the delight of their fans. Just weeks before this, Kelce spoke about his hopes for marriage. While he thinks his parents had a solid relationship and did an excellent job of raising him and his brother, he didn’t want the same dynamic for himself.

Kelce’s parents, Ed and Donna, stayed together to raise their children, divorcing when Kelce was in college. He said they were extremely dedicated to their kids, which may have been a detriment to their marriage.
“They were always the ultimate partners in terms of being there for us as kids,” he told GQ in 2025. “There was no division in terms of anger at each other. I think the romance of it all might’ve just kind of faded, being so focused on their careers and raising a family. It’s probably hard for parents to keep that romance, especially when you’ve got kids that are into f***ing everything, you know?”
Kelce said he only noticed strain between them once. He knew it was their anniversary, but they didn’t do anything for it.
“I remember seeing [the calendar] and I was like, ‘Oh, it’s their anniversary. I wonder what they’re going to do,’” he said. “And it was kind of just another day almost. Another day of knocking out things for the kids.”
He noted that he “never saw the romance” between his parents and wanted something different for himself.
“The handful of my friends whose parents are still together and still thriving — those are situations I would love to have,” he said. “Not that I think my parents dealt with it the wrong way or anything like that. It’s more so, if we’re gonna start this and do it, why not try and do it to last forever? Not just in a ‘It’s just for the kids’ aspect.”

Kelce now has the chance to do things differently. He and Swift just announced their engagement in a joint Instagram post.
“Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married,” reads the caption.
The news comes after months of rumors that they were headed for marriage. The couple began dating in 2023, during her Eras Tour.
His family has spoken about how happy she’s made him
When asked about his son’s joyful attitude, Kelce’s father said there’s one specific source.
“Taylor,” he told People. “There’s no question about it.”
He said he loved watching the couple interact on the New Heights podcast. Swift appeared as a guest and announced her upcoming album.
“I think it was awesome,” he said. “It was great to see them go back and forth. They’re two people obviously very much in love.”
