Lauren Graham Calls ‘Gilmore Girls’ Popularity a ‘Gift’
Lauren Graham has been in many successful projects since the end of Gilmore Girls in 2007. Despite her success on-screen and her second career as a published author, Graham is almost always asked about Gilmore Girls and the show’s almost cult-like following. The actor never expected it to be like that, seemingly almost shocked every time the show and its enduring popularity are brought up. Still, she insists it has been a “gift.”
Lauren Graham calls ‘Gilmore Girls’ a ‘gift’
Lauren Graham never seems bothered by interviewers’ desire to chat abobut GIlmore Girls. In fact, fans note that the actor seems to light up whenever the role is mentioned, even when she’s actively promoting a different project. That is what happened during a recent appearance on Today.
Earlier this month, Graham appeared on the morning talk show to chat about her upcoming movie, Reminders of Him. While she discussed the flick, she was also asked about the enduring popularity of Gilmore Girls. Graham seemed a bit stymied about why so many new fans are flocking to the show, but she’s sure happy about it. She noted that, when it was airing, Gilmore Girls was an underdog up against shows like Friends. While it enjoyed middling success at the time, she considers its enduring popularity a “gift.”
Other cast members have theories
The show’s enduring success wasn’t something anyone saw coming. It really feels like a show like Gilmore Girls could not have the continued success it does without streaming service providers. After all, that’s what gave the show its initial boost. A streaming home doesn’t ensure popularity, though. Several cast members have offered their own theories on why the show remains so popular.
Scott Patterson, who played Luke Danes, has spoken regularly about the show’s enduring charm. He points to its calming, “almost therapeutic” quality as the reason it continues to resonate with fans. Kelly Bishop has a different take. Bishop, who starred as Emily Gilmore, has suggested that fans return to the show year after year because of its unique characters and relatable family dynamics.
Milo Ventimiglia and Keiko Agena have also discussed the series. Agena, who played Lane Kim, has marveled at the show’s sense of community, while Ventimiglia, who played Jess Mariano, believes the scenes continue to spark real conversations about important topics.
